  1. 1. Should I do the LGA 771 to 775 Xeon mod on this board?

    • Yes! you have nothing to lose
    • NO! because there is too much risk involved

Hi so today on craigslist i got a free computer and when i brought it home and opened the side panel i was surprised to see a high end p45 LGA 775 motherboard, high end radeon GPU of its time, high tier PSU, good CPU cooler, and 4gb of high speed DDR2 memory. so now the only thing missing is the HDD which i have plenty of. so my question now is should i buy a cheap X5460 Xeon and do the Xeon mod on this board? ive done the mod once and it worked this is a high end board so i should be able to get really high overclocks with the xeon cpu. plus the whole point of this is so i can sell the PC back at a higher profit like maybe $200 or $300. the only thing i have to pay for is the Xeon cpu. i already have the mod stickers so should i do the mod? IMG_1887.JPG

if you already have the stickers and experience, go for it

20 dollars is a great deal for a CPU that will waaaay outperform the top-end Q-series chip

Here's a great write up on the Xeon mod and what chips your box should support. http://www.delidded.com/lga-771-to-775-adapter/2/

The LGA 771 Quad Xeons are much cheaper than the LGA 775 Quads.

So I say go for it. Usually the Xeons overclock better as well.

thanks

I'd upgrade it to 8GB of RAM, and maybe the video card (depends on how much you want to spend)

you'll probably get around 250-300 for the lot after the CPU and RAM upgrade

so last night i just ordered an X5460 for $24 on ebay and i just cut the 2 socket tabs on the motherboard already this morning. now all thats left is to flash my custom bios i made last night and also to wait for the xeon to ship and put the mod sticker on the back of it. im not going to be upgrading the memory or video card since this is just a project PC and i dont want to sink alot of money into it. maybe ill sell this as a $250 CSGO potato PC. or $300 if i decide to upgrade the memory.

may i ask how much did you sell your X5460 PC for on this forum?

What does the mod entail?

requires physical and firmware modification done to the motherboard and physical modification to the CPU. though the risky part is the physical and firmware mod of the motherboard. physically modding the CPU is quite easy. after 3 things are done and working you can overclock to really high overclocks like 4.0GHz on that xeon and that basically gets you i5 2500 performance for just $20

With a $1 sticker and some sandpaper you can do it for $20.

but have you tried to oc the q9300 first and see how much you can get out of it?

If you can get 3.5-4.0GHz out it then it isn't worth the effort.

aww shame. i bought the CPU for $24 last night. didnt see that listing... bummer.... well its only $4 and i already have the stickers at home though. i saw the previous owner get 3.2ghz on it before which is not bad but still in the end i am selling this PC for profit and the main selling point of it is the modded motherboard and Xeon in there at 4.0GHz

Making a custom BIOS is pretty easy and not at all time consuming, especially for an AMI BIOS. (though I believe your Gigabyte board uses an Award BIOS)

I have used modded BOISes from the link agent_x007 mentioned before and I must warn you, I've bricked 2 mobo's with a BIOS from that site, though I updated 3 others successfully. So I would advise to do it yourself if you feel confident about it.

Also I would chose to mod the CPU instead of the socket but it doesn't really matter, just my preference.
