Hi guys,

I ordered a ssd yesterday and it will arrive tomorrow.

I have a few questions since i want to install windows on it but still use the hdd for pictures and stuff.

This is how i think i would do it:

1. turn my pc off (duhh)

2. put in the ssd and connect all the stuff

and then idk how to proceed. Do i need to put in my usb stick with windows 10 iso stuff on it

and go into the bios ? and pick the ssd for the start stuff ?

and if thats the case i just install it on the ssd right ? but i have 2 windows on my system then right ?

1 on my ssd and 1 on my hdd ? Can i just delete ALL the files from my HDD once im done with installing it on the ssd ? or is it gone anyway ?#

And if i managed to do all that i have a question about where the files go that i download.

I suppose it will automatically chose the SSD but that will fill it so fast so is there a way to make the HDD the standard place for the files ?

i hope someone can help me

0) make sure you have your widows key before you start! or use a keyfinder to find it for you!

1) use this tool to put windows on a USB drive https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/software-download/windows10

2) back up any files you want to keep to another USB or google drive or something

3) unplug any drives you currently have

4) plug in only the SSD

5) plug in the USB drive and install windows following these instructions http://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-clean-install-windows-10/

6) install all windows updates, install your programs, move your personal files back from google drive or wherever you saved them

7) plug in old HDD(s)

8) make sure in the BIOS that you only have your SSD on the boot order, you dont want to boot from the old HDD

9) in "my computer" you can now format your HDD

Ok seems pretty easy but theres one thing.

Do i really need the windows key before installing it ?

Because im planning on buying one later.

I used my old hard drive in my new system and apparently my key didnt work anymore because i have the activate windows in the bottom right corner.

Or can i get into the new one with my old not activated anymore key ?

So you have windows running on HDD already now? Are you okay with formatting it now? if you can then heres the steps:

1. install ur ssd: sata cable and power cable.

2. go into bois and set usb as the first to boot.

3. put in ur usb drive and restart.

4. ur pc should recognize the system drive and start the installation process. During this process, it will ask which drive do you want to install ur system on. So first you want to format your HDD here (just in case the two system conflict with each other), and then choose to install on the SSD.

5. after installation complete, you want to go to disc management in windows and configure your HDD drive. Linus/Luke all did a video on how to do this. just search Linus's youtube channel or NCIX youtube channel and you can find how its done. However, you dont have to follow every configuration they did, such as the paging staff. SSD nowadays have a better lifespan and can survive those services.

And now you are golden.

I believe you can get thru the installation with a old key. Is it for win10 tho? if its win7, it may not work. BTW, the sigh in the bottom right doesn't mean ur key is not valid anymore, it may just becuz win10 is having difficulty reactivating itself. I have this issue recently and you just need to wait a few days the it will reactivate itself.

As long as its a legit key that activate ur windows b4 it should work.

Where did you get ur key at the first place? did you upgrade from win7?

settings ->activation and upgrad->activate windows, and it should show some info.

Ok i think im gonna buy a new key as well.

A few questions though.

Do i need to buy a full key for like 120 euros or can i use an OEM one without worrying about it later ? I dont need any extra programs or any of that stuff just normal windows for gaming and working and stuff.

And do you guys buy your windows keys at keystores like g2a ?

I buy almost all my games in keystores and ive never had any problems but idk maybe the windows keys are pirated

and ill run into trouble later on ?

a full key is the morally correct option

a lot of the stuff on G2A is pirated, if you really need to buy a cheap key use reddit microsoft software swap instead

they arent really pirated, but its a grey area, but you probably wont run into any trouble, ever

theres really no point to buy a OEM one

I bought my key cheap from some keystore as well. Haven't run into trouble. If you can, buy a retail version instead of OEM. OEM key is some time binded with your mobo. and if you swap the mobo out your key might not work again. But hey, its cheap, buying two only covers half the price of single one from Microsoft.
