New rig. Nas, server, and gaming/work.

Hey LTT.

So, I'm building a server, and figured I'd update/improve my current rig.

It will include:

*The main server (this build

*A Nas that everything will backup too (I need a partlist, that's one of the reasons for this thread).

*A new gaming/rendering rig (here) (Finally going for the 4k setup I've wanted for a long time)

So I have a few questions. First off, what kinda nass power would I want? If some one can make me a partlist that would be great. Second, what else do I need? I mean what software do I use for the nas, and what is the quickest way I can transfer files, and do backups? Anything else I need? Do I need a raid card? For the server I was thinking raid 10 with those 4 ssds. Lastly, although I have desktop cases in those lists, what do I need in terms of cases for everything (the gaming pc won't be rack mounted)? And what do I need to know when picking a rack?

Thank you so much. :)

OK, I'm guessing that the server will run MC, the NAS will backup the world, and the render PC is for exploding stuff in highly intricate 3D... or rendering. If that is the case, why don't you unify into one computer and dedicate cores to different operating systems. It would greatly reduce the clutter caused by a rackmount system, and reduce costs so that you can buy a UPS in case the power goes out.

What are you doing on the server?  That build seems overkill. Also id probably just get a dell t430 instead. Also why do you have a gpu in the server as the mobo has a igpu in it. If your running minecraft this is way overkill.

For a nas id probably get a synology or qnap nas, there more than good.

What do you mean by 3d rendering. Are you using blender, maya, 3ds max and rendering in mental ray, or renderman? That cpu bad for any use, so id probably just get a 6800k.

Seems to make sense. So it would use unRAID like Linus did a while back?

Yes mc. I'm aware it's overkill, and I may downgrade it some, but you don't need t o worry about that - thanks for your interest tho.

Yes, you're right about the gpu, no idea what I was thinking putting it in there.

I dislike prebuilts, but ill look in to it.

Alright, the 6950x is definitely overkill anyways. I'm using blender, and some maya with renderman. I'm looking to expand upon purchase of this pc.

Thanks

Why not make the rendering and gaming( and server if you want) one system?

Also don't get a titanx for the rendering pc, get a gtx 960 or a quadro. You don't need much gpu power for modeling(unless your rendering on gpu). Even then get 1080's or 980ti's

Sorry, was having trouble with the editor on mobile. Alright, I got caught up in it. I suppose it makes more sense not to have a different PC, and just put a 6800k in the gaming build.

Thanks

Yeah. Working on a part list right now. Custom water cooling or not?

Hadn't really thought about it. Was thinking h100I and GALAXY hof 1080s when they come out. If it's no problem, a partlist with that (substitute 1080s) and a partlist with water cooling (this would be my first custom loop build, so simple is better).

Thanks

Sure! How much storage do you want for each PC?

Now I'm kinda confused about which thing your doing a build for... But either way: the gaming pc around 3tb, for the server ill start with maybe 2, but possibly upgrade more. I'd say make the nas have 10 terabytes of hard drive with an ssd cache.

OK, got this so far. All I can tell you is that you'll need a "small" amount more money then you might have expected...

Thanks so much. But, I'm confused. Isn't that a big boost from the old server? I understand that it will be 3/4 systems in one, but... went from like maybe 10k, or less to 26k...

But either way, thanks a ton for taking the time.

Thinking of doing 2 rigs, the server/nas and the gaming/rendering (not using unraid, just one system).

This would be the server/nas.

This would be  the pc.

I could also do this as the all in one.

Thoughts on those?

Thanks

I think the seperate builds are good for the most part. You might also want to take a look at the HAF Stacker cases, which, well, stack. Also, what about renders. I'd get a 5960x or eq. Xeon in there.

I believe the 6800k will be good enough for me. Thanks tho. As for haf stackers, wouldn't that be a challenge for ATX and a server mobo?

Thanks for all your help :)
