980TI G1 Gaming in SLI.. Suggestions

After being into PC's for over 10 years now, taking a bit of a break in between, I have finally built my first SLI machine. With how good the stock cooler was on the Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980Ti I never understood why people did watercooling on their gpu (unless going for crazy OC).... But I do now... Even at stock clock settings (for the G1), these cards get pretty hot in SLI. Under load they both sit around 80-85C with the fans going almost full tilt. I have everything installed in a Corsair Air 540 case with the stock 140mm fans (2 front, 1 rear) as well as two 120mm fans on my H105 cooler up top. I've upped the fan profile to get more airflow through the case but it still causes the fans to really ramp up on the cards even under moderate load.

 

So I'm thinking of going watercooling for the 980ti's. I've never done a custom loop before and honestly my first foray into the watercooling scene was the AIO H105 (which is AWESOME, room temp idle temps on my 4790k).

 

What do you guys suggest for water cooling my build? Where do I start? Keep in mind I'm fairly partial to this case.. Or should I live with a moderate amount of noise and not worry too much about the temps?

 

Here's quick shot I took last night. I was in a rush to get things together to see how everything ran and knew I would be replacing the PSU cables with sleeved ones anyways so I wans't too careful with my cable management.

It is a tight case to work with but not impossible. If you want the best go with EK.

Ya, I just did some google fu for some air 540 water cooled cases and didn't see many with sli setups... and those gigabyte g1 980ti's are loooong.

Not sure now is the time to be installing blocks on 980ti's, not trying to be negative. You could sell the 980ti's and pick up a 1080 and a block for it, install the custom loop and go with 1080 SLI once the prices drop.

This is exactly what I just did with the 980ti. By the time the 1080 comes down the 1080ti will come out and I could just sell the 1080 and get a 1080ti.. If you continue to do this you will end up always waiting for the next card around the corner.

 

Gotta pick a time to commit to a build and not worry too much about whats next that will come out. I just did this during the previous generation. Of course I looked at the cost of a 1080 and selling my 980ti vs the cost of adding a second 980ti... 980ti in SLI still won out at the moment (got it for $400 off).

Only concern I have is the lack od space for the reservoir and pump. You could make it work but those big custom PCBs on the Gigabytes will haunt you. now this is me talking, and I am not sane. But I smell the opportunity to do some custom case modding here. Put the reservoir outside the case, should be room for the pump next to the 24 pin on the motherboard. As it's your first time my suggestion is soft tubing, maybe a theme that lends itself to the black and red theme you have. Doom theme?

I think I might be better off doing a full custom loop in a case specifically built for the purpose my first time out. Those nice new cases with tempered glass are looking pretty sweet.....

 

Funny you mention doom theme... So far that's what has been played most these past few weeks on this machine. I just insalled philips hue lighting in my office and desk, and created a custom "doom" profile.. Talk about ambiance! I should have loaded the game up for this shot, but oh well..

Nice! Picked up some backlighting myself from IKEA, totally get that it adds immersion. You have a beautiful set up.

 

I agree that getting a case built for custom cooling is the right call, and tempered glass is just, so very nice. My next case will have it for sure. Check out the build list here, Paul's not the best bender but you could use soft tubing and blocks meant for your cards. I think the flow meter would look awesome in a Doom inspired build.

if you go for water cooling in Air 540, there's the entire back compartment for your to put all your pumps, reservoirs and some radiators that don't fit in front and top,

no worry, it's a great case

What do you guys suggest for water cooling my build? Where do I start? Keep in mind I'm fairly partial to this case.. Or should I live with a moderate amount of noise and not worry too much about the temps?

 

Here's quick shot I took last night. I was in a rush to get things together to see how everything ran and knew I would be replacing the PSU cables with sleeved ones anyways so I wans't too careful with my cable management.

On the other hand, you COULD upgrade to a 1080 and sell me one or both of your Tis!

i had temp issues with Sli so I added that fan on the side :) really helped !

even with a big case like mine full of fans I still couldn't keep them cool 83 and down clocking :/

but not anymore :) too card sits at 70 degrees

My first foray into custom water cooling was with the help of an EK Kit.  They font sell the one I used anymore but similar to this... https://www.ekwb.com/shop/ek-kit-p240

It gets all the basics covered and you just have to add 2x GPU blocks and 4 fittings to match.  This is, of course, soft tubing which I think is great for a beginner.  

 

However, if you want the "pro" look and want to do hard tubing, you're probably starting for scratch.

 

Many people also don't find the cost of EK products to be justified and there are more.... economical... brands available.

I can see how an extra intake fan would be helpful. Very nice build, looks VERY similar to my own! It really wish Noctua would come out with some nicer coloured fans.... :(

Ye I wish noctua would too but fortunately when the side panle is on u can see them haha so it's all good 

plus they are dead silent and cool better than all my other fans

I was thinking f getting some for my build. The SP120 fans I have on my h105 have sounded like the bearings have been failing since day 1... I was either going to get some noctuas or get the new gen of corsair pro fans that were announced this year.

It's a corsair AF led fan

its just big because it's a 140 lol

only static pressure fans I have are on the rad lol

Noctua brought out some black fans not to long ago that look a lot better ;)

Must be the angle. I had to ditch my Corsair LEDs because they drove me mad with how noisy they are. Been really lucky with my SPs. The Dead Silent fans I got work great but aren't much quieter than the LEDs. Oddly my Tt Ring fans are probably the best LED fans I've ever bought.

G1 Gamings don't really need water cooling unless you're really crazy about the noise and temps...

Thats kind of how I feel about it. It's was my first night with them in SLI so it may take some getting used to. Your right, there is LOTS of room on the back compartment for the res and pumps if I wanted to, and I am really partial to this case, it's been fantastic so far and I love the cube case form factor.
