RX480 should do it in just about every game save maybe Witcher 3.

Not really, at max settings it will dip in games like far cry, tomb raider the division, and many others if we are talking maxed out

I'd say the 1070 is the lowest that will max out any game constant 60+fps 1080p, which is rather funny considering how much hype some cards have been getting.

GTX 1070 is for 1440p ... so it can easily handle 1080p.

But RX 480 can max out pretty much anything at 1080p, for almost 2x lower price.

So get what you can afford :)

But keep in mind that if you will upgrade to 1440p in next 2 years, it would be better to buy "future proof" gpu now.

If that couldnt do it, we'd all be screwed. Or at least I would, I cant stand anything lower than 60fps xD

You also must have a 1440p monitor or else there is no use if your monitor only handles 1080p. This is the same with 4K

Well it kinda depends.

Right now RX 480 can handle 1080p gaming. But what about games that will come out in next few years? Will that GPU still be able to run those at 1080p ultra settings? Probbably not. But GTX 1070 sure will.

Unless games will add more of that "hairwork" like witcher 3 features that takes crap load on GPU power xD

1070 or if you can get 980ti cheaper than it. Youll be playing on maxed out settings on more than 60fps

GPU - Asus Strix 1080 8gb

RAM - 2x8gb Corsair Vengance

Some games that a 480 can't get or maintain 60 FPS from in 1080p at maxed settings are:

GTA V

Witcher 3

Assassin's Creed Syndicate

Crysis 3

For future-proofed max-settings 1080p gaming, I'd get a GTX 1070.

Or just buy the cheaper card to save money so he can upgrade when he gets a new monitor.

Or that.

I'm not saying that RX 480 is bad for 1080p. It's great for 60fps. Just saying that if he can spare more money right now, he can buy GTX 1070, and have future proof for 1440p if he ever decide to upgrade monitor :)

But if he won't do that, by all means he should get RX 480.

It's probably best to go with the cheaper card because who knows what kind of advancements AMD, Nvidia or game devs will have to increase GPU efficiency. Chances are it will be better to get the future card if he buys a new monitor anyways.
