I'm looking to build a new rig, I'm thinking of either getting an i3-6100 now and upgrading to an i5 or i7 later, or getting an FX-6300 and upgrading to an 8350 later.

Here's to keep spam down and so it's easier for me to see results.

http://www.strawpoll.me/10681200

Opinions?

Both configs would be stuck with either a 750 Ti, 1060, 980, or a 390/390X

EDIT: Right now I'm thinking of doing this build: http://pcpartpicker.com/list/RKrMZ8 The power supply is for future upgrade-ability, and this system will eventually get a 6700K and 980 Ti as they are dropping in price and will only drop more with the new 10 series... If not getting a 1060.

getting an FX-6300 and then upgrading to an 8350 would be a huge waste of cash. going intel would be a wiser choice in this case

Computer Case: NZXT S340 || CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 || Cooler: CM Hyper212 Evo || MoBo: MSI B350 Mortar || RAM Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3200MHz || PSU: Corsair CX600 || SSD: HyperX Fury 120GB & 240GB || HDD: WD Blue 1TB + 1TB 2.5'' backup drive || GPU: Sapphire Nitro+ RX 580 4GB

Laptop 1 HP x360 13-u113nl

Laptop Lenovo z50-75 with AMD FX-7500 || OS: Windows 10 / Ubuntu 17.04

FX 6300 matches the i3 6100 in most modern games and loses in old games. Go for an i5 6500 and a H110/170/B150 motherboard.

Don't like to echo others, but if you're planning to upgrade down the road, I'd get a skylake i3 (or i5). That way when you want to upgrade you can have something on what will be the current platform (and as much as I want Zen to be good, at the moment AMD isn't at the same level as Intel for IPC). That'll save you cash down the road becuase you can reuse your RAM, Mobo, etc. Also RX 480 is by far the better choice, just look at anyone's benchmarks.

Main Rig: R9 5950X @ PBO, RTX 3090, 64 GB DDR4 3666, InWin 101, Full Hardline Watercooling

Server: R7 1700X @ 4.0 GHz, GTX 1080 Ti, 32GB DDR4 3000, Cooler Master NR200P, Full Soft Watercooling

LAN Rig: R5 3600X @ PBO, RTX 2070, 32 GB DDR4 3200, Dan Case A4-SFV V4, 120mm AIO for the CPU

HTPC: i7-7700K @ 4.6 GHz, GTX 1050 Ti, 16 GB DDR4 3200, AliExpress K39, IS-47K Cooler

Router: R3 2200G @ stock, 4GB DDR4 2400, what are cases, stock cooler

I don't have a problem...

yeah, as much as it would be nice for this to change, most games even today don't take advantage of the many-threaded CPUs of today. Which is why I recommended Intel right now, because they still smoke AMD thread-by-thread.

Actually no. FX 6350 beats the i3 6100 and FX 6300 matches it. You see, games are using more and more cores and are now demanding 4 threads as minimum. i3s are barely cutting it and a OCed 6350 with the Wraith Cooler bundle blows them away.

Not true. @Prysin has much more to say in that field, as he purchased an i3-6100 for a secondary rig, and "enjoyed" an Intel-based stutterfest.

IPC means jack shit if the game has stutter issues due to the dual-core nature of the i3. You can get DDR3 2400 for the FX and then it's a different story. Also, Wraith Cooler is a free 212 EVO for OCing

Go for the i3-6100 because its not on a dead socket.

We have at least 2 generations of CPU's left on LGA 1151

1* - Kaby Lake is 1151 then on to a new socket.

Maybe, but it is still a better idea to get an i3. Better upgrade ability. At this point of time, it isn't worth getting an AMD CPU before Zen comes out.

EXactly - i5 minimum for gaming. i3 is only a thing if you are in a 3rd world country like me.

Getting a i3 is like getting a ticket to stutter land and being forced to go there

No! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cannonlake

Cannon lake will be running on Union Point, Just like Kaby lake is!

We know Kaby Lake is running on 1151, also Union Point based!

i bought that CPU myself based on that review and some others.

The setup is as following:

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/QJbD8K

Now the old setup i had before the i3 was this:

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/kn7HNN

In the games i played, that would be

Rise of the Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider 2013

Rainbow Six Siege

Guildwars 2

The Witcher 2

The Witcher 3

every single one of these games, the i3 was FASTER (FPS wise) but it STUTTERS. Like every, single, fucking, one.  And the old setup, did NOT stutter. However due to a bug in the ASRock BIOS (which ASRock hasnt bothered to fix even though it was first posted on ASRock forums back in 2014) , the old config was a fire hazard.

And that thing is, the old system was overclocked to 4.5GHz on the CPU. And even then, the i3 is just 15% slower in synthetic multi-threaded score.

During gaming, the i3's cores are pegged at nearly 95-100% ALL the time. Whilst the GPU is around 85-100%.

I always hear, "spend most of your budget in the GPU".

I wish I didn't take this advice.

Buying a proper CPU can last you YEARS, while a proper GPU usually dates within 2 years time.

Spend more money and get a skylake i5, and be happy for the foreseeable future.
