Help with DDR4/i5/RX 480 build

asand1

I'm going to help my friend build a new computer. We have decided on DDR4 and an RX 480, beyond that there is no real plan. He plays World of Tanks, surfs the Internet, and might get back into WoW. Budget is $600-$800 i think. He wants to go SSD only (~250Gb). Quad Core 3.5Ghz preferably. i5 should be plenty for what he does and still be a bit future proof. Mainly I'm looking for mobo/CPU recommendations. He will not be overclocking BTW.

Black Knight-

Seasonic Focus GM 750, Samsung EVO 860 EVO SSD M.2, Intel 660p Series M.2 2280 1TB PCIe NVMe, Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon

Daughter's Rig;

MSI B450 A Pro, Ryzen 5 3600x, 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3000mhz, Silicon Power A55 512GB SSD, Gigabyte RX 5700 Gaming OC, Corsair CX430

I mean if all he plays is WoW and world of tanks, he doesn't even need an RX480.

He is a little jelly of my 114 FPS coming from my GTX 960 OC edition and I explained to him that the best bang for the buck is in the $200 range, and it doesn't get any more bang for the buck than the RX480. If he had a better system I think he would play better games.

First of all, Drop the notion of getting back into WOW. Its not going to be any different then Warlords was, Youd be better off with another game!

Second You probably could do a i5 6400 or 6500 build, with a decent amount of space for a SSD and gpu.

More Mobo than he wants or needs. No need of SLI (especially with an AMD/ATI card), 2 Ram slots would be plenty, no need for more than 8GB for now, and don't need overclockablitiy.

Wow. Much overkill on the motherboard. I wouldn't get the Nvidia card. RX 480 is the same performance at $40 less.

I'd go for a larger SSD. 240GB runs out a lot quicker than you'd think.

I assume you'll want a case and power supply.

Yes we will need a case and PSU. I lower price of the MOBO you suggested. I would check Newegg for a non Crossfire board with two ram slots, but the website is not responding, probably all the RX 480 traffic.

Didn't notice the GTX card. Yeah, why pay so much for a 970 when the 480 is jsut as good for less? I think I'll take your advice on the 16 VS 8Gb RAM.

Would something like this perform well enough with an i5 6500/6400 and 4x4Gb RAM

I really don't want to get more Mobo than he needs, and SLI/Crossfire is just too much.

While the Asus Z170-E board offers crossfire and SLI, you dont need to use it is the beauty of it. That is a solid mobo on the Z170 chipset and offers expansion to a i7-6700k if he decided he needed it, and lets him overclock. Also, if he decides he wants to play more graphically intense games he will be able to throw another RX 480 in for GTX 1070 like performance :)

The EVGA B2 sells for $65 on Amazon.

The Hyper 212 EVO is loud and big.  Not needed.

You don't need a $110 motherboard.

You are at $855.

Dude, the Asus Z170-E mobo is cheaper than the H170 mobo, by 5 bucks without MIR, and like 25 with MIR. Also you might wanna try the Cryorig H7 cooler, it is said to perform and look better than the 212-EVO

He wanted to go cheap on a mobo but not too cheap I Think. He had a $110 H170 mobo so i told him to go with the Z170 mobo for 5bucks less because in the future it can accommodate unlocked CPUs and overclock and/or crossfire for the RX 480

$65:  http://pcpartpicker.com/product/s27CmG/gigabyte-motherboard-gab150md3hgsm

Again, why spend more?

Valid point, no reason too. However it is MicroATX and he may want an ATX mobo for an ATX case, unless he wants to do small form factor. Really up to him and his buddy. :)
