Help with DDR4/i5/RX 480 build

Valid point, no reason too. However it is MicroATX and he may want an ATX mobo for an ATX case, unless he wants to do small form factor. Really up to him and his buddy. :)

It is a gaming rig.  You put the money where there will be a return in the form of performance.  If you want to spend $100 for the motherboard, you go Z170.  Then you match that with 3000MHz RAM because the RAM is so cheap and does translate into CPU performance in games with a lot of CPU overhead.

Locked CPU + Z170 board + 2400MHz RAM = waste of money on the board.

I like small form factor.

Hows this? http://pcpartpicker.com/list/GgJ2RG

I would drop the cooler and get a decent power supply.  That EVGA unit is...  not so well made.  $65 gets you a good unit.  Don't skimp on power for $20.

wait I'll explain EVGA PSUs...

B2, G2, P2 are made by Superflower and are all decent quality.

GS, PS are made by Seasonic and are all decent quality.

B, B1, G1 NEX and GQ are made by FSP.  The GQ is not bad apparently, but the rest are not good units.

What Semi-modular 500W PSU would you recommend? I like the H7 for its RAM clearance and low overhead clearance in a small case.

The $65 Seasonic, fully modular one I linked.  The B2 750W semi modular unit you had is good too.

@asand1  The Patriot SSD I linked was $60.  It has decent speeds (not 850 EVO, but pretty damn good) and Patriot is a good company.  They have good customer service in my experiences with them.

@asand1  They don't have the Torch LE (too new) and the SP600 but this is a general idea of how they will compare:  http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Patriot-Ignite-240GB-vs-Adata-Premier-SP610-256GB/3573vs3281

I substituted the Seasonic 520W and Patriot SSD, as well as dropped the RAM down to 2133 to match the Mobo

Any recommendations for a mid tower? Still not sure what he'll fancy in a case aesthetically. I like an OEM look myself.

The case only includes 1 120mm (intake) fan, and IDK if its PWM. I would prefer 120mm PWM IN/EX on a splitter (only one SYS_FAN header.

That is why I specified low rpm, so you can run it at 100% and it be quiet.  It does not have to have massive airflow, just enough to get air moving in the right direction in a steady manner.

Looks good.  Grab him a cheap, low RPM 120mm fan for a rear exhaust.  Maybe two, one for the rear and a second front intake.

I like my 92MM x2 (all that will fit) running PWM split with a Molex feed.

Sure, but 120mm is better  :P ...potentially.

I will have to post my junkyard wars modded Lenovo sometime. Maybe start a modded OEM thread.

If you can squeeze this in, do it:  http://pcpartpicker.com/product/JHV48d/deepcool-cpu-cooler-gammaxx300

Save your friend's ears some annoyance when he starts playing a CPU intensive game.  No one likes to hear the whirl of a small, high RPM fan kick in.

It might also stabilize the boost clock on the i5 6500 better.  Stock will probably cool enough though, just so loud.
