What are you planning to do, 1080p gaming on high setting 60fps, or 1440p 60fps max/1080p max over 60fps.

If the former a 480 might be for you if the latter the 1070 all the way.

I play flight simulator x and with my current setup I get about  20fps and that is in 1600 x 900

If you want the best investment in terms of how long the card will be relevant, go with the 1070. Substantially stronger graphics card, but it will be completely overkill for your needs at first. The RX 480 is the much better value for you, but will show it's age much quicker.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

You'd probably be fine with a 480 then (unless you get more into gaming and get a higher res monitor), though pricing is a little weird in Europe right now for the 480 so if you find something like a 390 for cheaper than the 480 it might be a better option price wise.

I assume Germany, he's UK and as you know it varies quite a bit throughout Europe for whatever reason.

Trading up to more powerful graphics cards is much more expensive than just getting the best graphics card you can afford. Learned that lesson the hard way.

depends, @Morgan MLGman would disagree, he sold his 970 for a 290x that overclocks like crazy

To repeat myself, once again: performance isn't the only thing that matters to many people.

Comparing the 480 to my OC 290, it could run 60FPS maxed out 1080p.

Mine run GTA V and Shadow of Mordor maxed 60+ FPS just lower MSAA or something.

And I owned a 290 and 390. If I had started with a 980ti it would have saved me a lot of money.

Well, I just got lucky with the deal. I used my 970 for 4 months, then sold it for only a tiny bit less than I bought it for, then bought a (faster) 290X that overclocks like crazy, and made 50$ on that deal because that's how much cheaper the 290X was. With around the same warranty as my 970 :P

290x is a damn good card. No doubt about that.

Wish it was a Vapor-X though, but they're insanely hard to find in Poland. A pity, because they're glorious.

Yeah... I'm yet to see a more beautiful card... Maybe a Vapor-X 480? Who knows...
