Personal rig modded on the cheap

Did you get the 3 or 4 pin Spectre Pros? And what do you think of them?

And nice mods. :D

Thank you!

I got the 3 pin ones (4pin fans are expensive for some reason)

They are very quiet at 5-8 volts and after that there is some motor noise.I wouldnt use them at 12volts. They move a good amount of air even with the mesh installed  and I am happy with them :) The only complains I have are that the cables are quite short and they where making a strange noise the first days(like there was not enough lubrication inside the motor) but now that noise is gone (for now at least)

Have you tried them at 12v?

Thank you very much!

Yes I am using variable voltage to control the fans.

I haven't thought about that but I think it could be easily solved buy giving the fans more voltage to startup and then slow them down quickly. So for example if the fan worked at 5volts after undervolting it  but can't start spinning when i give it 5volt from the startup, then I can give it like 6 or 7v and by the time it starts spinning it will slow down to 5volt. The arduino will be able to monitor the RPM of the fans so it can all be done in program.

I am still waiting for the voltage regulators to arrive ( probably this weekend) to start testing.

Sounds good, that was what I was about to suggest =)

A lot of aftermarket fan controllers use the same feature. As for using voltage control rather than PWM, is a the better option imo, the (probably poorly built) PWM circuitry in the fans tend to have a disturbing "clicking" noise. Then again I'm silence freak,so this may not be a problem to everyone. Been running (almost) nothing but noctuas in the gaming rig for probably the last 3 years.

I tried pwm and there was a stupidly loud coil ticking noise. I am a silence freak too but I cant afford noctua fans -_-  So I use whatever I can afford.

Thank you! It took so long because I had exams and I couldnt find any type of mesh. And even after I found some, I messed up the first time and had to find some more. I will post  new updates in this weekend (fan installation and filtration of the front panel.)

I will also start making a new PSU cover today because the old one had dust build up problem and it was impossible to fully clean. (color didnt mach good too)

I also want to add a window to the side panel but I dont have the tools to cut it myself :( I will see what I can do.

Will probably have the fan controller and front card reader done in the next few days (still waiting for some components  )

Yep i had an FX-8350 under a H60, Ran way too hot. Even in Push - Pull it was noisy too.

I got a 8320 @ 4.8 under a H80i and it gets to like 58C. I guess it's very much the silicone lotto.

I hear you man, they're silly expensive!

I couldn't have afforded to buy them alla t once, but since they never wear out I've switched out one or two at a time, in my rig when I felt like I could afford it (as I said I've been runnig noctuas for years).

Hmm, now you just made me realize, that I've spent ~150€ on Noctuas  , not sure how to feel about that  :P

here, one noctua fan costs around 20 to 25€ or ~30$ . That's wayyy  to much money for one fan. I can get 2 fans at the same price :P

Just received my package today with the final components for the fan controller and a raspberry pi! Going to be messing aound with it so dont expect any quick update :Ppost-18625-0-67881800-1391431439_thumb.j

  • 2 weeks later...

Just a quick update guys.  I started working on the fan controller and I was not that happy with the solder quality but it works so I will have to leave it as it is. Soldering all this little stuff together is a real pain in the ass because my soldering iron tip is too big. Also I got(it was a present) a mechanical keyboard and I freaking love it! I got the cm storm quickfire TK with Cherry MX blues. I will finish the fan controller and redo some of my pc components as it is messed up right now(fan cables everywhere and dust built up)

Thank you! I love the feeling of the mechanical keyboard <3 I will do some testing today with the fan controller and finish soldering 2 of the 4 channels. I just hope that one voltage regulator will be able to drive 2 fans at the same time without overheating at low speed(I will use heatsinks btw)

SO the fans finally arived! they look sweat! althought they dont match the mobo blue, while spinning they look more like translucent so I am ok with that. Also the side panel fan got removed. What I noticed is that the foam I used to make the PSU cover accomulates a lot of dust and its hard to clean so I am thinking of vinyl wrapping it black or carbon fibre. Still waiting for the arduino to arrive from china. These fans are a little bit loud (not like the corsair ones)running at 12volts. Cable manangment is temporary. Bitfenix Extensions will be ordered soon!

SO I will probably cover the red areas with something to reduce dust accomulation.

This was while I had only 3 fans and the stock cooler. Now the back fan is set as exhaust :)

A small update guys!
I finished the first channel on my fan controller and it works beautifully! Now all that left is so solder all the parts and complete all four channels. After that, the LED strip will be connected to the arduino as well and then everything will go inside my pc. Also I rebuild my psu cover but dont have any pictures of it as it is drying in the garage right now

This is one of the more interesting buildlogs in this forum because you've done everything from scratch. I do like that selfmade fan controler and I'm looking forward for the finished project.

Cheers!  :)

Watch out, there might be ninjas out there
