speedtest is 12 miles away

The servers and networks are fundamentally different. Speedtest servers receive a ping signal and send back a pong signal pretty much straight away, as that's their primary function. A game server and the network is going to be checking and processing traffic, as well as doing other things.

Distance itself also isn't a primary factor. You could have a server 100 metres away from you and another identical server 10 miles away, but if the server 100 metres away requires 5 hops to get to and the one 10 miles away only requires 1, chances are the one with a single hop is going to have better ping.

The game is connected to a different server than speedtest is. You probably just got a lousy server on the game.

I'm not aware of any tools to test and log how many hops it takes to get to a destination over WAN. You could have a look at Traceroute tools, but I've only seen them applied to local networks.

EDIT: Cisco seems to have some Hop count tools, but I've never used it myself. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/voice_ip_comm/pgw/9/feature/module/9-6_1_/FMHopFwdMap.html

I'd expect to encounter issues using them outside of private networks.
