What type of cable/port is this?

This is the master socket but this connection type it is all across the house these ports (they are phone). It is not RJ11 but is a phone line, what is it? 

Then it does into a filter which can have itself come out of it and a RJ11 port.

Yes that is correct, the plug is known as a BT socket or British Telephone socket but the proper name is BS6312 431A.

The device you are holding if you don't know is a DSL line filter to separate out the phone single and DSL signal.

The device you are holding if you don't know is a DSL line filter to separate out the phone single and DSL signal.

Why do they use that and not RJ11? All phone we have just have that connector go into an RJ11 into the unit.

That is the standard connector in britain, they chose it decades ago instead of RJ11. New installations can have either AFAIK.
