uh, no, thats just ignorance and lazyness

you do not upgrade to windows 10, you clean install it

and pretty much nobody else has problems with windows 10 so you're obviously doing something wrong

but osx is definitely better for technology-incompetent people who dont know how to even run a simple command like sfc /scannow

so i guess you can enjoy OSX becaise it "plain works" (said every console peasant ever)

Well Microsoft gives the Option to upgrade, why the hell would you not do it, lol. A normal User, who wants to use his PC normally and has no idea how to clean install an OS is ignorant and lazy to you? If Microsoft gives the option it damn has to work otherwise its Microsoft fault for implementing something which doesn't work. Then take a look at how many reddit posts, forum threads etc. exist around "start menu windows 10 not working". As said, i tried your sfc /scannow which did nothing. Later ran the often reccomended option of: Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}, which worked until the next restart, same goes with the .bat file.

You call OSX an operating system, which only "technology-incompetent" people use. Completly disregarding that most Professional Users actually use OSX, not Windows, if it's Image Editors, Programmers, Video Editors etc.

You're one of the typical "Microsoft peasants", no OS out there could ever be better than Windows and everybody in the entire world wants to go into the cmd to get an OS working, otherwise they are technology-incompetent. Good logic.

Edit: As this is turning into one of the thousands of Apple-Microsoft wars, maybe accept other peoples opinions and don't always think that your option is the best? Thanks.

apple's OS is part of the apple ecosystem, if you don't like how apple run things then you don't like most part of the apple ecosystem

if apple sells the OS like windows then OSX will become windows anyways

sounds like you need to move on from OSX, if you care about games then go windows, if you care about simpliscity then i suggest chrome OS, if you care about customization then ubuntu or any linux ecosystem

Thanks guys! I just don't know windows much. I used my sister's computer to use internet explorer and it told me to update. I pressed update but ran out of space. I didn't know how to delete for storage like cache and just app memories. So I went into the whatever memory settings or something, but it won't let me click at app memories to delete. I don't know how to download apps, or even where the settings are. Halp!

I agree 2000-2008 was the hay day for macs. Mac G3-G5 and the 17inch mac pros. Now they have all these proprietary storage and soldered RAM. Not to mention the performance just sucks for mac books and mac book airs. All their all in ones thermal throttle. Their mac pros are out of date and it does not cost $800 for 16gb of DDR3. It's stupid apple. They could make even more money if they released a Mac Pro 5,1 but modern with new xeons and GPUs. I still have my 3,1 with a 7950 in it I flashed

Hi guys, I really want things like GTX 1080s and Core i7-6700k in a osx ver. Why hasn't apple done shit in the computer part? Like, if they don't give a shit about computers now. Their mac 'pro' costs 4000$. You can get f*ckin double, or maybe triple the perf for half the price. I really like the apple OS, but I really hate that they don't have much support for anything. Like, no support for DDR4? Really? Can't put the latest, at least somewhat good graphics card? Can't shove a i7-6700k in? You can't download games that are better than mac supported ones?. I know apple's not focusing on gaming, but some people who game just are too fond of their OS. I tried using a windows, but I can't. apple's OS is much better BUT no support. Just shit. If you aren't gonna improve your hardware and performance, why don't you just sell the OS like windows? Or at least make it so that you can put a DDR4 in it and a decent CPU and GPU. I just hate apple that way. Please, PLEASE have more supported GPU, CPU, RAM, and software apple. I just can't use windows and I'm sure other mac lovers do too...

You can get macs with a 6700k and ddr4 in the imac. Also if you want a os that isn't windows look over at linux. Its much better if you want a os that is differ

True, the guy in the video explained that it took twice the time to export the same movie on mac than his custom pc

You know how fast Apple's PC lineup would die if they didn't have exclusive software? They would be gone overnight.

Artists make little enough already, why does their software have to come with so many "hidden costs".

Well this has been discussed in how many threads now already, no one knows.  Honestly, Apple products are not really over priced once you take into consideration other factors:

  • OSX is free (relatively speaking, because you have to pay for almost every new version of Windows and pay for Windows licenses if you build your own machine, or if you order a prebuilt from, e.g. DELL, you have to pay extra for the version of Windows you want even if the basic OEM version is part of the initial cost).
  • I'll never understand why Microsoft has to create various versions of every generation of Windows.
  • Apple's competitor to MS Office suite (at least Word, Excel and Powerpoint) is now free.
  • Nearly every Apple Mac, Macbook Pro, iMac have a higher build quality than almost any non-Apple machine out there.  Build quality is NOT cheap.  Few companies that are not Apple really takes the time to design a nice looking product.  After spending years with flimsy plastic/composite cases for laptops, moving to an unibody MacBook Pro was one of the best choices made.
  • OSX is more intuitive and user friendly than Windows (at least for me).  I'm sick and tired of having to deal with constant Windows Updates and software installation/uninstallation issues.
  • There are features built into OSX that I like, which doesn't exist for Windows or requires a third party software.
  • I don't make money troubleshooting computer problems, so the less time I waste dealing the issues, the more money I make with my actual work.

So while a fully rigged up MacBook Pro might cost me somewhere in the neighborhood of $3500, it's worth more than compared to a comparable $2000 Windows laptop.  I might be able to save around $1500 buying a Windows laptop, but it would've cost me several factors more than $1500 in headaches.

Students get office and windows 10 for free. Assuming you live to be 100 years old, for 1/4 of ones life they could have acquiredthem for free. But even then just use your kids when they are in school.

I agree with Apple computers being well built. (Better is subjective)

You can disable updates if you want, but I agree they do happen a lot...

I see the market for Mac's (Those with more money than know what to do with. Hipsters, people that don't research/understand hardware performance, and those that need Mac exclusive software/features)

Guess the following points are just subjective, but I do respect your choice to buy what you prefer.

Lastly, the cool part about the millennials I know is we don't care. We really don't care what people think of us what so ever. It can be a good thing and a bad thing at times.... but we generally dont care at all what anyone thinks.

Regards, Sir

P.S. Being able to say you'd be willing to pay well over double four less specs is like someone buying a 300k Lambo instead of a 140k GTR... it may have a better appearance, have some exclusive features or handle better but the GTR out performs the Lambo... up to the individual I suppose. Seems illogical to me though.

Why would you want a 1080 in a mac? It would seem like a waste to me given that there aren't that many AAA games that work on mac os.

20 hours ago, IMPERIUS said:

but wouldn't the real professionals buy something with a xeon or a titan gpu? because Apple's macs don't usually come with that type of hardware afaik

mac pros have xeons and firepros in them with ecc ram. titan xs quite frankly suck balls for the price and offer nothing to a professional - no ecc vram, no high floating point performance, meh opencl support.

As for iMacs, the only thing that is "professional" tier is the screen, but sometimes that's enough. A photographer doesn't care about a grazy gpu or cpu, he wants a really good screen and a system he's comfortable using. I'd never buy one because of their price compared to what they offer, but that doesn't mean nobody would. If I were a photographer I'd probably buy a decent pc and a very good monitor separately, but that's because I'm comfortable with handling cables and assembling my own computer.

1080 is currently the best consumer GPU for video editing... every hackintosh owner is waiting for the day NVIDIA makes the OSX driver for it.

While there are people who are like this, there are also other Mac/Apple users who know what they are doing but they invest in Macs because they provide the best option for them, at least better than the alternative.  Hardware performance is not everything.  Someone can buy the fastest most powerful non-Apple hardware out there because they can afford it, but if they use it to its full potential then it's a waste.  There are a lot of Apple consumers who know what they are doing, myself included. I work with many of them, and we pay extra because it suits our needs more so than the cheaper non-Apple product.  Money is not everything for us.  If we feel that paying extra for something more reliable than the competition, we will pay for it.

As for the rich people with more money than know what to do with it. Well, it's their money, let them do whatever they want with it.  They've earned their wealth somehow.

As for hipsters... well there are also a ton of non-Apple consumer hipsters.

I think Apple should start telling people "If you have to ask about the price, you can't afford it."

Indeed, Need should be greater than Want.  My need is for reliable hardware and software so that I can concentrate on the things that are more important to me than having to perform an update every week or resolve BSODs.  After over 15 years of inconsistently reliable Windows hardware and software, I am happy I moved to OSX.

I would say it like this: Apple looks for customers who are interested in other things. People who value products differently than an enthusiast! It is not correct to say, that those people are dumb, it's just that they have other values, like design. It's the same as the cars market... some people buy cars more for the design as the raw power, because it is a lifestyle sign! And this is how apple is positioning their computers.

So can we expect that apple will open their software? No, surely not! Apple is focusing on software following the quote from Alan Kay:

If you're serious about software, you should make your own hardware!

So don't expect that iOS or macOS will be sold separately soon! And making software and hardware comes with some benefits for customers too. For example, optimised software for hardware!

I don't really understand all this hate about apple form a lot of enthusiast! It's just an other product and if people want them, why shouldn't they exist? Apple has it's place, benefits and drawbacks, like a custom build pc too!

For you specific, there are possibilities to run macOS on a custom built PC, but don't expect it to run as smooth as a real mac! And you need a lot of time, fixing problems and this kind of stuff. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about!

People don't hate Macs, they hate Apple. They have something people want and monopolized it. For everyone the thing they monopolized is different.

  • For myself, it's software. The only thing I want is final cut pro and garageband for content creation/youtube.
  • Other people its the OSX that they won't sell to PC owners so we resort to hackintoshs.
  • Some people resent that fact that they monitor the users product so much or try to control what a customer does with the product.

There are reasons to hate PCs and Macs, but the difference is PCs are made by many companies and Macs are made by Apple. If you dont like Asus, but parts from MSI... with Macs that's not the case. My real beef with Apple is they aren't price competitive to enthusist, if I can save $50 to do something myself, I will do it. It took me several months to earn $1700 and the computer I built out performs my dad's $3500 Mac...

I am a logical/analytical person. Macs just don't make since to me but I can see the appeal.

For the time being it'll be "buy what ever consumer card (AMD/NVIDIA) makes a driver for OSX then throw it in a hackintosh... I really hope it's NVIDIA's 1080.

I have never had a file corrupt in the 20 years I've been alive. I transfer up to 250gb at a time when file dumping video footage and edit 16gb of that footage at a time... it's is about perforamance if you need fast turn around on projects. Biweekly project releases with a 10-20 VFX/3D models per video... I don't what your needs are since this is specifically for myself but in video work and all of the gaming community performance is the highest priority.

Once a video is finished the files can always be back in my personal cloud, in my computer, on the YouTube upload list (It'll be compressed though), and on a NAS (When I save up for one)

Redundancy > ECC imho

All about performance per dollar :)

Yeah, I understand you point. Apple has, in my opinion, no interest to be competitively priced for enthusiasts. Thats simply not their place in the market.

As an enthusiast, I would not consider to buy a mac. But for my actual needs, I own a mac, which serves my great. I enjoy a seamless experience with my other apple devices and don't waste any time setting them up. This is how I justify the 'Premium Price' for myself. I think I am as analytic than you, but I just don't have the time or pleasure to set up and tweak all my things to work (which I did and loved). This is why I think a lot of people love apple. I think the missing point in all this comparisons is, that they all fulfill the needs of different persons. The ones who love shopping for hardware, finding the cheapest deals, tweaking all settings, building the pc... and then there are the other ones, they just buy it and need it to work. No time for all the research and stuff.

So what is the difference between a 'Mac' and a 'PC' for me? Companies like asus, dell.... just sell 'commodities' while apple sells a hole story with it.

Completely agree and see your point. And I'm sorry you're too busy to build, it's such a wonderful/rewarding feeling to create something and it work well :) I think my first/only build took about 3 hours with the help of a friend.

As for buying a computer... I honestly could never justify it wether Mac or PC. Prebuilt PC's can be just as over priced and underspeced as any Apple product. Laptops are another story, while I would of course have to buy a laptop, I would never pay the company to put in RAM/Storage for me as they typically well overprice it.

However, the only laptops I recommend are the custom built Sager's when the push for deep discounts and I mean DEEP. Like 64gb Ram, 2.7 CPU, 980M, 500gb M.2, 2TB HDD and 1TB SSD for $1400. Which is cheaper than the price for the parts to consumers. Also if Apple made a laptop with thunderbolt 3 ports... since you could utilize an external GPU at that point. What a glorious day that will be :)

While yes, you could play the games in windows. People want 4k at 60hz and 1440p at 120hz all on ultra settings. Even 1080p at 60hz on ULTRA is a struggle for the 980 in most AAA games. Its a hardware issue at that point which the external GPU via thunderbolt 3 would likely fix.

yes, but then again, people who buy a macbook, even a macbook pro, aren't the type to be hardcore gaming on their laptop. it's probably more for casual or medium amounts of gaming, like me. for me, i have my own dedicated powerhouse pc at home, and a macbook pro for a portable workstation.

Best of both worlds haha

When I save up enough money it'll be a struggle decided between a Mac laptop and a new camera. If I can get the Hackintosh running properly, I leaning camera. I just love windowed cases and watercooling over trash cans and thin pieces of aluminum but that is just preference ;)

But again.... FCP is such a dang good editor. Import footage, drag drop in NLE, Select all, one button color correct, one button color grade, one button stabilize footage. Walk away for an hour to do chores, eat, whatever come back and BAM! All done.

Now to just shift through clips and stitch them together :)

honestly i need a new gaming pc, or a new macbook pro for portability. a new gaming pc on pcpartpicker according to what i want is around 1500. the macbook pro starts at 2 grand, but education pricing  (do i have to be in college for that?) starts at 100 bucks lower, for the 15 inch model, which is the more powerful model.

really, any video editor that apple makes is really top notch. hell, even imovie is 100x better than windows movie maker, because the graphics for imovie and the transitions and everything just like blend in. on windows movie maker, everything is so abrupt, and jarring. i hate it.
