Hi!

I plan on building my very first PC; I used to buy those pre-built computers, but my guess it that a custom built pc is much more reliable and upgradable thus lasting longer.

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/fqz4D8

You can see all my parts above;

I plan running windows 10 64bit on it; and use it for gaming as well as video recording and editing.

You'll see I've put a pretty heavy power supply on it (750watt, according to pcpartpicker the draw would only be 300 watt), that's because I'll probably upgrade to 2 more powerful graphics cards (==> SLI bridge); but for now the GTX 960 4gb should be enough I guess (what do you think?); should I go for a lower powwer supply?

I also have a whole bunch of hard drives laying home, anything will work for that I'll use an SSD for booting (and slap a 3,5" HDD in there too for storage)

I fix my budget to 1200$; I do want DDR4 ram, and I won't spend over 300$ for a graphics card at the moment.

Do you guys have any tips or modifications to suggest?

Thanks for your time!

Ben

=============================

Edit

1. Budget & Location
Below 1200$

2. Aim
Gaming, programming, video-editing
3. Monitors
An ultra wide monitor.

4. Peripherals
uhm? keyboard and mouse

5. Why are you upgrading?
Currently on a laptop; my tower is a granny PC.

Edit number 2

I changed it a bit, it now looks like that

Things I would change:

#1 Iwould get a cooler master hyper 212 evo for your CPU cooler instead.

#2 That motherboard is awfully expensive for your CPU.... Since you're doing video editing you could consider downgrading to a mobo more around 120 dollars and getting a 6700k. Of course, you could just downgrade the mobo and leave the CPU :)

#3 AMDs rx 480 is launching on June 29th, will cost only 200 dollars, and should perform around an r9 390x-GTX 980. You should get that instead of a 960 for sure.

#4 That psu is overpriced. I'd recommend an evga g2 650 or 750 watt psu instead.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

I'd search for a less expensive motherboard and power supply for sure. Those are way too expensive for what you're actually getting out of it.

GPU prices are dropping really hard so you can get one for $300 that will be better than a 960. For gaming I'd suggest a RX 480 or waiting for other cards to drop in price.

I don't think I'll overclock the CPU; If I do I plan on buying http://www.corsair.com/en/hydro-series-h110i-280mm-extreme-performance-liquid-cpu-cooler

Not sure yet though

and why is the GTX960 a no-go?

If you don't plan on overclocking, get a normal i5-6600. GTX 960 is a no go since the RX 480 will be much better for only $200.

Definitely go for a i7 if the budget allows it. It'll help a lot when it comes to video editing.

Thanks DocSwag!

#1 I'll follow your advice on the cooling, 5$ more is not a problem

#2 For the motherboard, I consider keeping for a bunch of years; but I guess you're right. Also would an i7 be overpay?

#3 Alright I didn't know that! I'll definetely have a look at that

#4 Wow that's a lot cheaper !

As said above i would cheap out a bit on the mobo, and put it the money somewhere else. GTX 960 no go, r9 380 would be better and even so new gpus that are quite more powerful are coming out in the same price range. PSU if you are thinking of SLI or Crossfire go for 750 w but again i would prefer a better single gpu over a sli or cfire. PSU rmx 750w would be cheaper and a good one too so you can cut some money of there too. CPU cooler for a budget system an coolermaster 212 evo would be great.

i7 only for gaming is not value for money. I would do it cause i like the extra power but if you are on a tight budget i would not consider it as an option

If your $1200 budget doesn't include storage or Peripherals, you could go with a 1070 or dual RX480 you know :P (by the way, how much do you edit and what ever? If it's massively more than gaming and whatever, you could always jump onto the x99 platform :D).

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

If you don't plan on overclocking, this is the build you should get:

http://pcpartpicker.com/list/TFRcf8

I changed out your PSU to something almost equivalent, but a fair bit cheaper. the HXi 750 MIGHT be slightly better on paper, but in your use-case, you wouldn't notice any difference at all. (You can still go with HX750i, but the Supernova 750 P2 was much cheaper at the time of this post). I got you an i7-6700, and H170 board. You can of course still go 6700k and a Z170 if you want, but it would cost a few extra bucks. and a single RX480 8GB version to round it out. You can Crossfire 2 of those later on if you wish and it would be a system to be reckoned with (without any benchmarks to see exactly how good it will or will not be, I would wager somewhere between 1070 and 1080 performance)

Also, if I do plan on overclocking, would a liquid cooler really be necessary?

Not necessarily unless you want to run even lower temps or even higher overclocks than that cooler can provide. I have that same cooler on my i5-3570k and I've overclocked it from 3.4 to 4.4 without hitting 70 degrees. Had to dial it back because of some crashing to 4.2 though. For the money you'll spend on the cooler it will give you a nice area to play around in for overclocking. If you decide you want to get really serious with it, then pick up a liquid cooler. For beginner overclockers it'll do a very good job.
