Is skylake worth it ?

Go to solution Solved by AresKrieger,

i7 4790 I am assuming (I think you made a typo) and upgrading to skylake would not be worth your time, since the performance difference isn't really that great between haswell and skylake, you have hyperthreading while an i5 doesn't, and ddr4 doesn't really matter either.

Overall stick with the 4790

Hi there,

I'm in a debate whether I should upgrade my current pc or just get a new mobo for a skylake system. Is an i7 4690 non k better than an i5 6600k ? And how long do you think the i7 will last before it becomes obsolete also is ddr4 really worth it will it affect performance ? If I had to upgrade my current pc I would only need to upgrade the cpu psu and gpu instead of a whole new system. What do you think I should do?

I'm assuming you're talking about the i7 4790

Gaming performance wise, the i5 6600K will top the i7 4790 but that isn't to say that it isn't close. In terms of multithreaded applications, the i7 will beat out the i5. Haswell is still a very viable platform and not far behind Skylake.

TL;DR - Stick with Haswell, the performance difference in comparison to Skylake is minimal at best.

Unless you are a numbers chaser, you'll never notice a performance difference in the real world.

Well if you already have a Haswell based pc you may as well just upgrade that. If you're building a brand new pc may as well use the latest and greatest cpu architecture.

The i7 4790K is around 40% faster than the i5 6600K in modern games. Skylake is a downgrade in your case - a severe one
