LinusTechTips forums aren't blocked

Google Translate is blocked

 

Seems about right.

It is because Google translate can be used to go to Web pages that are blocked.

I'd imagine they're using a custom list. Enough students would have to visit it and it'd have to become known to the faulty in order to block it...although I cannot explain blocking Google Translate. Back in my old high school the Admin blocked YouTube & Facebook but only via HTTP (default port 80). If you used HTTPS (default port 443) you could access these websites. Until the students got found out then the school blocked those ports too.

I have a question I wonder if you could answer. If a firewall of some sort is blocking access to a website via it's name. Let's say www.facebook.com and instead of accessing it via it's name you bypass the DNS lookup by using it's IP address (currently IPv4: 31.13.66.36) would access theoretically work?

No, it would not work because the DNS will resolve the IP to "www.facebook.com"

My school gives us detentions for using google translate for homework your school might have blocked it because it is not you translating and showing your skills in that language. Forums tend to vary depending what year you are in (guessing your school is in ireland) fourth year students (year 10 GB) allow stuff like youtube and reddit. Plus backpack doesn't have many keywords in it so it isnt detected until a teacher manualy blocks the site (It took my school 3 years to block the useless web thats how I think I know the key word thing).

So the local network would see a reply back with the name www.facebook.com and the firewall would block it anyway?

We had problems where translation was a big issue for example when blocking game websites. Others that do not speak English as a first language would be able to bypass and go on game websites in there own language and it would completely bypass the filter 80% of the time

I'm going to put a link to my PC specs which actually aren't my PC specs and I cry myself to sleep everyday so I can have these PC specs but I can't afford these PC specs so PC specs PC specs PC specs PC specs PC specs PC specs.

My school lets you on google translate but they block sites on the block list because they decrypt https and read it but let you do it on aloud sites.

I used google translate for about 90% of my french homeworks and it was only ever noticed once and it was even called brilliant and amazing. But then i did not take it for GCSEs because I found it so hard.

I have a general understanding of DNS servers. They match domain names with their public IP addresses and resolve addresses by saving the IP in the computers nslookup table for future reference until the system is restarted. If the DNS server doesn't have the information for the website you're trying to access it'll send out a search request to other servers to try and locate it and if it gets a reply it'll add it to it's own table then forward the request to the client. If it fails that's when your browser gives you and error saying DNS lookup failure. Weather or not DNS servers do more than that I'm not sure but I guess the video could inform me.

If you used it for single words then it is fine, my teachers don't notice but when you try and translate an etier paragraph. it may translate it correctly but it is in a tense which we haven't done yet and is like a uni a* level.

another way i sometimes used it was you come up with it in french and put it in google translate and if it made some sense in English I considered it good enough.
