I agree with the others above, works out just as cheap to buy from a store, and to be frank that combo doesn't even make sense. If you have a budget in mind take a look at http://www.pcpartpicker.com or tell us here and someone will price you out a build... be specific in what uses you have in mind for the PC too, as that helps narrow things down and saves money where it can too.

it doesn't now, but with the Z170 chipset he can get an unlocked i5 or i7 down the road and start overclocking, no new motherboard needed. I think of it as future planning. Anyways, Z170 isn't that much more expensive than the cheaper motherboards. It also has more features.

but he can just buy an i3 and z170a from any shop without fucking around on EBAY for exactly the same price

And honestly since overclocking is not really necessary he can get an i5 and b series board for the same money from a reputable store

Yeah, but that's the problem really... you can future proof lots of stuff and say "well in the future you could", but that leads to budget creep, and we don't know what uses the OP has ATM as we have very little info. So there's really no point in trying to suggest stuff at the moment and just assume the OP has a very budget build in mind and wants to game I guess.

opinion alert

I think overclocking is a little necessary to extend the life of the CPU. A 6700k will last longer than a 6700 because you can overclock it to match newer processors. An i7-2600 is still okay, but a 2600k is better, since you can OC it to match newer i5's and the like.

Also, you're right about the i5 for the same price, but only with the lowest-end 6400:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6400 2.7GHz Quad-Core Processor  (£149.86 @ CCL Computers)

eh maybe, but he will be losing money on the i3 when he sells it which needs to be factored into the whole thing too

Eh I havnt even really bothered to OC my 4770k and its fine, and the locked i5s really dont perform any worse in gaming - and it costs a lot just to add a smal boost to framerates since then OP needs more expensive cooling etc adding half or double the cost on top once all added up

I would save the i3, never know when you'll need an 1151 CPU ;) (unless he wants 50 GBP in his pocket.)

and duh you haven't OC'd your 4770k, it's only a few years old.. A 6700k is barely faster in gaming. CPU's haven't evolved much since Ivy Bridge.

yeah so a 6400 etc will be fine for long enough without worrying about OCing

I think he should just get the i5 and any 50 GBP motherboard (there are TONS on PCPP.) Same price and better performance.
