external hard drive problems

ok so my external hard drive just turned all my photo files into shortcuts and just deleted everything automatically i didnot do anything. all the files just disappeared but the drive still says that it has 300gb used of 1tb storage pls hep so i dont know if i can recover them or if the drive is faulty pls help

That reminds me of a certain cryptolocker virus (which doesn't actually encrypt anything, it's just to fool people)

 

What if you change the extension back to the original extension?

(I assume they were actual pictures, not just shortcuts originally)

 

Could also be a symptom of a faulty drive, but not a very common one.

as @HPWebcamAble said, this sound like some danky virus. 

You might try changing the extensions, or look to where the short cuts go. Have you made sure you are showing hidden files?

Have you seen any strange files/scripts/txt files?
