Should I upgrade now or wait for Vega / 1080ti?

Autoimmunity

Currently I'm running an i5-3570k @ 4.2 GHz and a GTX 780 (reference, EVGA SC stock speeds) and I'm starting to feel the itch for a new GPU.  The 780 isn't quite cutting it anymore, it struggles with high settings @ 1080p and can't hold 60fps in most modern games, though it is still a solid card and gets the job done.

What I am wondering is if it would be worth it to wait some more for the 1080ti / Vega, with their HBM2 memory and faster speeds.  I really, really want to be able to max out BF1 at ~90fps at launch, but I suppose I could forgo that if the enthusiast cards take a while longer.

What do you guys think? Will the performance difference between the 1080 and the 1080ti / Vega be enough to justify the wait?

EDIT: Just so everyone knows I have a 40" 4K panel and a 144hz 1080p monitor as well, to take advantage of these enthusiast cards.

But seriously you should be just fine with a 1070/1080 or even dual 480s.

Unless you're planning on 4K or 1440p at 144Hz, the Ti and Vega will be overkill.

Which one do you game on? If the 40" is the one you game on, then a 1080 at the most would be fine. The 1080 Ti is probably gonna cost more than a 980Ti. :P

Currently the 1080p, but that's mostly because my 780 can't run games at 4K, period.  I'd love to play more demanding games on it if I had the horsepower.

The GTX 1080 is just barely not able to maintain 60 FPS at 4k and ultra settings.

If you're OK with medium ish settings, the GTX 1080 will be perfect

I tried crossfire in the past, wasn't too impressed with the result.  I can't imagine that SLI is much better either.

1080ti ON PAPER looks like the card to get from the whole 1000 series line. It could come this September or next year (HBM2 doesnt come out till next year..).

1080 is too expensive but it can run games at 4k abd 1440p 144Hz.

The problem is that those benchmarks are with current games.  With future games I can see it being worth it to wait for Vega or a 1080ti.

I don't expect that the 1080ti will be released before Christmas, given Nvidia's history and HBM2's production yields.

However I am very curious about Vega, what I DON'T want to happen is to buy a 1080 only to have the Vega one-up it 3 months later, if the October release rumors are true.

Nobody said it would be HBM2 card, would be nice if it was. They could also do D5X this year and HBM2 verison next year.  People would still buy it.

Sheesh, the 1080 literally just came out and you aren't satisfied with it :P

You could SLI two 1080s which will beat a 1080ti anyway. And I'm sure the games that require two 1080's would support SLI, since they'll likely be AAA titles.

Good suggestion, unfortunately I can't spend $1300 on GPUs, though even if I could I probably wouldn't, SLI just isn't worth it to me.

My brother is in the same boat: he wants to be all over BF1 on launch at 4k, so he's getting two 1080 Hybrids when they come out.

I have an r9 280x OC, and am looking at upgrading. The next graphics-heavy game I want my system to be prepared for is Battlefield 1, so I feel OK in waiting to see what gets released between now and then. Then again, I'm also thinking about selling the r9 280x and buying an RX 480 once partner boards are released. If I knew whether Vega was coming out this year, my mind would be resolved either way (this year, wait for Vega. Next year, buy RX 480 now). There'll be another 1.5 months before RX 480 partner boards are out and reviewed, so I hope that more concrete information on Vega's release will have emerged within that time.

It's also good to note that 4k is nice, but really expensive to game on (as we are seeing here!)

If you stick with 1080p or 1440p, you can get a single 1070 or 1080 and maintain 144 FPS easily (respectively)

Im almost certain AMD is gonna drop vega to coincide with the release of BF1. If not id get CF RX480 as it has dedicated A sync compute hardware unlike nvidia's half software half hardware solution. You will get superior fps just like most amd hardware does on DX12/Mantle/low level api. Battlefield has already been announced they will be using async compute just like AoS. 1070/980 ti  and 1080 are fantastic cards but they cost a fortune.

If you CAN wait, you should wait. That's my motto anyway, I'm still using my 280x on 1080, and it gets the job done, mind you I don't have the time to play like I used to so I just play BF4 when I can.

I say wait for the christmas holidays and grab a deal. Until then you'll be able to play everything on your 780 still, unless you aim for max settings on BF1 on release, but you could play it on lower settings for a couple of months and get a good holiday deal, by then AMD's big cards sould be released.
