Hey guys,

I want to know what ram modules I should go for next. Specifically what speeds, and does ram speed and timing affect overclocking my CPU a whole lot?

I am planning on changing from my Hero VIII board to a Formula VIII, and the ram from G.Skill Trident Z 16GB 3000mhz to a Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB  kit. Just need the speed to choose now.

I noticed some of the most famous overclockers out there, such as 8Pack which sells custom systems, use lower mhz ram such as 2666mhz for DDR4 for their extreme builds. Yet for the builds which are skylake based and do not exceed 16gb of ram, they usually go stupid high like 3600+mhz... It's a bit confusing as to why.

Thanks.

It does not really matter I have 2666 ram but I run it at stock didnt see difference when was oced

Tried bench and game nothing really but if you plan to run server there should be some benefit, but atm more ram is just better and 16 gb is more then enough so 32 gb of whatever ram is good

Yeah I am tempted to get the 2666 kit, it is a lot cheaper than the 3k+ ones.

frequency does not affect games at all. just choose on what looks nice

I have noticed this as well, I know it makes a difference on APUs but for normal i7 + GPU setup, it shouldn't make any fps difference.

it does

but not worth an extra $100 or more over regular speeds

Oh wow! Witcher 3 with 3200mhz memory gets almost 18+fps over the lower speed memory..

Price is not a problem for me as long as I Can justify some sort of performance, and seeing as I game at over 100fps most of the time, this is a good jump.

He did have a point saying that each game respond differently to memory and cpu oc.

I ll have a look at how much more the 3200mhz kit is compared to the 2666 for the dominators.

Thanks!

Yes it does. Fallout 4 is an example of major performance scaling with memory speed, but there are other games that also benefit (to a lesser degree, usually). The sweet spot is somewhere in the 2400-2800 range depending on your system and how pricing works out when you're buying.

sorry that video was of iGPU benchmarks

everyone knows that an APU or iGPU performs a lot better with faster speed

i edited my post, now you can see sources where even with a dedicated GPU, modern games perform better with higher speed ram

Found one on Scan and it's actually a lot cheaper than I initially thought it would. Thanks for your replies guys, I shall order it tonight :)

The 3200mhz 32GB kit here: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/32gb-(4x8gb)-corsair-ddr4-dominator-platinum-pc4-25600-(3200)-non-ecc-unbuffered-cas-16-18-18-36-xmp

but for most games it doesn't affect it anywhere near enough to pay more for it

look at the forum links i posted

it is a pretty large difference

as i said, $100 more isnt worth it, but if the higher speed of ram is like $50 more, or $20 more, or even the same price, then yes it is definitely worth it

It's £35 more to go for 3200 over 2666. So might as well :)

What about timings, they play any part in overclocking at all ?

Yes, you'll have to increase your timings in order to achieve stable RAM on a faster speed.

However, this value does not mean absolute latency. So don't worry about needing to increase it, to a certain point.
