Best audio editor?

What is the best audio editor that has a nice UI and will let me do simple things like cut audio and change levels?

Must be free please.

Jokosher isn't a bad alternative to Audacity if you just want something simple with a better looking UI; otherwise there's TraversoDAW and LMMS if you want more features.

I use GoldWave, always liked it, hasn't changed for years but its an audio app... what is there to change really.

 

Plus the trial is fully functional, it just pops up the help at the start if you don't register it.
