Is Founders Edition/Reference Card Better Than Non-Standard?

Zangtetzu

From my understanding of this, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that the founders edition of the GTX 1080 is basically a fancy name for a reference card, where the non-founders edition is the models that are going to come as 3rd party overclocks, such as the ASUS 970 Strix.

If the Founders Edition is just a reference card, why is it priced higher? Isn't it better to buy the aftermarket graphics card from another company (such as ASUS, EVGA, MSI) that has a better cooling system ( maybe fans that are better than the blower fan on the 1080) and one that's overclocked?

You're buying a fancy cooler from Nvidia, they know some people want it but they also don't want to undercut board partners.

They expect people to buy the reference design because alot of people like the esthetics of the cars or has a case where a blower style fan is important

Because early adopters that can't hold their anxiety WILL pay for it, however dumb it may be. So Nvidia is captalizing on that: if oyu want to have a 1080 NOW, you pay us 100$ extra.

Given that MSI is releasing a non-reference blower 1080 I see no reason at all to buy the Founders Edition now.

  • "Founder's Edition" is just a "NEW" name for reference design
  • nVIDIA wants to have the "Founder's Edition" available in the market for the life of the GPU (e.g. until the GTX 11xx series comes out)
  • It purposely costs more, so it doesn't mess with the sales of the Add-in Board Partner's sale (e.g. ASUS, MSi, etc)
    • Mr. nVIDIA CEO mentioned this himself during the conference
