Is it safe to run fanless mode?

Guest

For example with the gtx 980 or with a pwm case fan? Any risks or all good things?

So long as temperatures are adequate you can run fan-less. If they get too high then no.

only risk is that the PWM fan doesnt curve based on the GPU, but based on either CPU or MB temps - atleast on my MB

CPU: 6700k 4.6Ghz GPU: MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X MB: MSI Gaming M5 PSU: Evga 750 G2 Case: Phanteks EVOLV

in theory, as long as your vareous silicon has a bit of thermal mass strapped to it, it has plenty of time to throttle and/or shut down.

really for any build, but especially for a fanless/silent build you want to check in on the temps the system runs at under load, and make sure they dont get out of control over time.

you shouldnt worry it'll set on fire, if our friend carey holzman manages to do crap like this you'll most likely not run into show-stopping issues:

omfg, I wonder if you can do that with an intel quad core.

It'll be an insanely fast way to check if a chip is dead or not.
