Hi guys,

as title says.

Gpu's fan spins 100%, but no picture on screen, on either DVI socket.

Pc does boot into windows, just no picture on screen.

Is the gpu dead again? :P

Tried:

  • Different DVI slots
  • Restarting a few times
  • Other Nvidia GPU (8500 GT) works.
  • Both Power PCI-E 2xpins connected, disconnected (beeps if disconnected).

Sounds like a dead GPU to me. I've had that before where the fans spin, but it's actually dead.

just wondering, i have a 8800GT that im going to put in a LAN pc so what can i expect my card to do? im guessing the 8800GTX is a bit more powerfull but how does your card do in games(if you play any)? and at what resolution do you play?

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Spoiler

Does everything but modern games at around 30FPS with some settings turned down (some games run fine at ultra) and you're stuck with DX9 I think.

It's not a myth if it worked for me 3 times xD Re-soldering worked. Of course it's delaying what's gonna happen, but unless you wanna replace the whole chip, this is the easiest, cheapest and fastest way xD hahaha.

Don't worry I do use a separate oven for this, not the one we cook in :D

No, he's talking about the fact that by ovening it you may be temporarily fixing a broken capacitor, but at the same time destroying the chip. Capacitors are cheap. Chips are not.

True, I completely agree.
But really here. Who positively can find a broken capacitor, buy the correct one, and replace it?

maybe 10% of people.
For the other 90%, (me) included haha, it just seems quicker, 20 min fix. If it doesn't go any longer, fine, buy new (used) gpu for 50$ haha.

-But is my gpu not posting cause of a dead capacitor?
It was working until i put it away in storage. After ½ a year, i took it out, and it was dead. wtf.

Well, you've been baking it. So the capacitor likely cooled down.

I think it's probably time to get a new GPU anyways. The 8800 is not top of the line anymore.

I'm going to have another go at the baking today.

Electrical engineers at work told me, they've successfully tried 250°C with blower. For about 6 minutes or so, until you can see the tin shine. Then you know it's melted.

I'm going to try this today. They were however sceptical, as there is a violet color on the PCB. Which is ususally caused by a lot of heat, or short circuit causing damage to the PCB.

Haha, OK.

If it was a UEFI install though, the video card will not display anything because it does not support UEFI. I had the same thing happen with my 2 4870X2's when I tried to reinstall them.

Technically that's what I should have done, but since I just wanted to mess around I am not going to bother. All modern cards support UEFI so it doesn't matter unless you are deliberately wanting to run old cards.
