I'm looking to replace my current laptop (4 years old, Lenovo Y580, i7, 660M). I'm a student and portability is important for me. Power is as well. I game a little bit (a lot of FIFA at the moment) and I also use SolidWorks, Inventor, and Fusion.

I've been looking at the Razer Blade 14 (2016, i7 6700HQ, 970M 6gb, 512gb SSD, $2200) and the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW (i7 6700HQ, 960M 2gb or 4gb, 512gb SSD, $1700). Both have Thunderbolt 3 which is a huge plus with the Razer Core.

The Blade is a good bit more expensive but also has 3x the GPU memory, is smaller (more portable) and lighter. I would also save $100 on the Razer Core. The 960M in the Asus scares me a bit because it doesn't feel like much of an upgrade from the 660M in my current laptop and it's pretty big even if it is thin. I really want to get my hands on both and see what they're like but obviously bestbuy etc. don't have any on display. If anyone owns either of these I would love some input.

The razer blades runs hot and I mean really hot and has thermal throttling and they have little to no quality control so overall a shit PC that belongs in the trash. The zenbook is not a much different story... BTW none of those laptops are workstation laptops, if you want real workstation laptops give used ThinkPad w series a look or the new P series.

The Blade runs extremely hot and thermal throttles all while having the single loudest fans in the laptop industry - 60dB under load. That is INSANELY loud. Avoid it.

Yeah I did use "workstation" a bit out of context. What I meant was basically i7 and enough GPU to run CAD. I don't need a Quadro, I'd really rather a GeForce card.

I'm not surprised it runs hot but my roommates Macbook does as well. As long as it is quiet for productivity (word, etc.) I can set the fans to vertical takeoff speed somewhere else if I need to render.

We are talking 96-97c. You could get a rebranded Clevo laptop, they make a 14inch laptop that is 14inch with a i7 and 970m and they have pretty good cooling and weighs only 2kg (4.4lbs)

Yea, I didn't buy it new I got a extremely good price on it to where it was actually worth it. It has a intermittent display and Razer Tech support won't do anything to help me troubleshoot it other than send it in and pay them $100 to even look at it.

They really stand behind their products /sarcasm

You have the 17' Pro - is that one hot/loud as well?

Well I mean you're not going to find a low profile gaming laptop that doesn't emit any sound at all. I also am not a huge laptop guy so I wouldn't know compared to other laptops.

It is a relatively high whistle pitch, but I wouldn't call it loud.

That is what I mean - the fans WILL make noise of air passing through the blades but the whine is what I was curious about. Temps during gaming?

I just got the laptop this summer, which I'm not using it nearly as much as I will be during the school year. I can boot it up later today and play some vidya and tell you what temps I get.

Aida 64, I got nervous when I saw the temps get that high so I only ran it for 30 seconds.
