New to Overclocking CPU plz help

Hello everyone.

So I decided I'd have a crack at overclocking my i7 4970k today.

I did a bit of research, saw watched someone else do it on youtube with the same motherboard as me. I do exactly what they do but it hasn't work? halp.

Specs:

Z97 MSI Gaming 5 Motherboard

GTX 970

20GB Vengeance RAM

i7 4970k

Corsair air 540

Corsair 750w PSU

Basically I went into the bios and changed the CPU frequency from 40 to 44 and then changed the CPU voltage to 1.140. In 'my PC' it shows up saying 4.00GHz  4.40GHz" but in CPUZ and Cinebench it comes up with stock speeds and I just don't know what to do.

Any help would be hugely appropriated.

does it show 4Ghz when doing stress tests aswell? also are you looking at the current speed, because if not it should be saying stock numbers

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

@Bananasplit_00 It shows 4.00GHz everywhere besides in 'my PC' which for some reason shows both.

try upping the voltage to 1.25V or and see if it still shows the same

Try enabling turbo boost in your bios. I had to do this in order for my bios to recognize my overclock.

@TheGamingBarrel If I up the ratio to 4.5 I bluescreen : /

@Bananasplit_00 I've done what you suggested and it still comes up with stock speeds :(

@Quix That's enabled by default on my motherboard but thank you!

Put it to 4.4, or raise your core voltage to 1.275V.

@TheGamingBarrel Still shows stock speeds.

I don't understand. Theoretically have I done what needs to be done?

Can I see a picture of your CPU-Z?

Does your motherboard have an OC bridge?
Some motherboards require a change in connection on the board in the form of a bridge.
It's usually located near the header connections.

Sorry I'm not 100% sure what you mean by that.

Your core voltage is lower than we said to put, but your overclock is most definitely there, try 1.275V And run cinebench, what cooler do you have?

Here is a snip from my board. This bridge has to be moved over one pin to allow for overclocking.

@TheGamingBarrelI set my core voltage to 1.275 like suggested. Weird. I'll check the bios again.

I've got the cooler master nepton 240m.

With MSi motherboards, some have really poor load line calibration by default, in your OC Menu do you have an option for "DigitALL" At all?

What stress test are you running?

You should use prime95 once you are satisfied with the clock speed.

@DioOmicida Mine doesn't have that but thanks for the suggestions.

@TheGamingBarrel Right, it's just that it's comparing mine to the same CPU but overclocked. Also, if my motherboard does have this option what should I do?

It's unlikely anyone on this topic actually has a Bios.
