Hello i got my parts and plan building my PC this week, but i was wondering what Windows to choose.

My older computer i sold to my friend had Windows 8.1 Pro.

1. Whats the difference between ''Pro'',  ''Ultimate'',  ''Home Premium'' etc. is there any performance increase?

2. Also the main question what should i choose Windows 8.1 or 10?

Or it doesn't matter and whatever suits best to user he should choose that.

Here is part list if someone interesed:

There will be no performance difference, only some small things you (as a gamer) won't use, I think. :P

Main gaming pc: Lian-Li Lancool II Mesh Performance - Ryzen 5 5600X - MSI GTX1080Ti Armor - AMD Wraith Spire RGB - ASUS TUF Gaming B550 Plus - Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2x8GB 3200MHz - 500GB M.2 (and a few other drives)

Gaming laptop: ASUS GL552VW: i7 6700HQ - GTX960M 2GB - 8GB DDR4 2166Mhz RAM - 1TB 7200RPM HDD

i actually had my upgrade to win10 go wrong to the point half of my windows install was windows 10, and the other half was windows 8.1

drivers had no idea what to do, neither did a lot of programs, and the windows installer itself was like "dude, i know this is windows, but WHAT THE FLIP is this even..."

both my laptops dualboot between windows and linux (one of them is usually on linux because windows is a torture device when on 5400rpm hard drives) but for my main rig -sadly- windows remains the lesser of evils.

i'd gladly run linux on my desktop but that offcourse creates issues with games, and is still rather problematic on the audio side of things...

having 3 (4 electrically) displays doesnt help that side of the fence either :P

You MUST install Windows 8.1 first then do the update as Microsoft generates a new ID number for your PC/Laptop ect . It just needs to be activated their end with their servers once its done its done for life on that machine.

I did that then did a clean install

If you dont do it that way round first yes its a bitch but it the only way . You dont even have to wait for the little upgrade icon near the clock in Windows or do a system update .

Just go to the Microsoft download centre and pull of the Windows 10' ISO file and media creation tool much quicker way

Windows 7 is the only edition with: "Professional", "Ultimate", "Home Premium"

Windows 8 has: Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, and Windows 8 Pro with Media Center.

Windows 10 has: Windows 10, and Windows 10 Pro.

What changes is the price of Windows, and features which you may or may not be interested in. It does not affect performance in any way.

I am not going to compare in details which version of Windows has what for every edition, 'cause you need to make your mind first on the OS, but Professional edition has business oriented features, like Hyper-V, and Remote Desktop.
