It needs to be constantly connected to a power source. That way opening the drive will trigger the SATA port, turning the computer on.

Although there is no point in doing that.

How would you eject optical drive when PC isn't turned on? Pressing button seems just waste of time when you have power button.

You need another PC or a Raspberry that's always turned on, and attach a CD ROM that points towards the power button of the PC you want to turn on. Whenever you want to turn on the other PC, just log into the PC that has the CD ROM remotely using something like TeamViewer or Remote Desktop, and eject the CD ROM.

Why?

Just press the power switch on your case to turn it on.

My old P3 board can be set to turn on with a password. now that's cool.

I think you can turn ur pc on by pressing any key on the keyboard. Optical Drive seems a bit far fetched tho as i do not know any motherboard that supports such a feature. This is very unlike to work but i think that it might be possible to create some sort of jumper from the dvd drive to the green and black wire of the power supply enabling it to power up the rest of the system.

This is what they were referring to I this video, you need a second system to turn on the main one
