So i want to run an external graphics card on my laptop but I don't want to pay all the money for a razer core or anything like that so what I was thinking am I able to run this: https://www.pccasegear.com/products/35031/gigabyte-geforce-gt-710-1gb,

on this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCI-E-Express-1x-to16x-Powered-Extender-Riser-Card-1M-USB-3-0-Cable-for-Bitcoin-/291733082457?hash=item43eca59159:g:mT0AAOSwq19XCHOO.

Would it be possible to run a gt 710 on a pci adapter but not use the pci-e connector just the usb 3.0 cable to plug into the laptop. Don't really know if it makes sense but hey what the heck. Thanks in advance.

A 710 is probably worse than whatever is inside the laptop - running it externally would make it even worse.

Either way as far as I know you can't use a graphics card to run games through usb, unless it's type c and it also carries thunderbolt. The adapter you found is intended for mining, where you don't need the card to produce an image and certainly not your main system ui.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

um.. not sure how you thought thats supposed to work because you still need something to plug the 16x connector on the GPU into, also a GT710 is so weak your intergrated graphics is probably better tbh

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

I don't think that this adapter is meant to use for an external graphics card, since I can't imagine that USB speed will be sufficient. Also, whatever you have in your laptop is probably better than this gpu.

It's not about speed, it's about the cpu having direct access to the card, which can only happen through pcie.

I thought that it was possible for the thunderbolt port since it was faster than regular USB 3.0. Then how can it actually work over thunderbolt?

Don't do it.

A normal PCI-E slot connects directly to the CPU. Or at the very least the chipset which connects directly to the CPU. It's all intended for high-bandwidth low-latency communications. Just right for the connection between the CPU and the GPU. If you must add something in between, like the case is for anything external, Thunderbolt is the smallest of all evils. It's an additional controller, but the transfer protocol is similar to PCI-E. There's barely any translation involved. But that thing is USB. USB 3.0 has it's own language. Every single bit that the CPU sends toward the GPU has to be translated to USB and then back to PCI-E. Not to mention that the connection is only one-way at the time.

If you insist on doing it, get one that connects to your laptop via mini PCI-E like this one. In case you didn't, know, you can plug an x16 card into the x1 slot if it has an open back like this one. You'll still need an external monitor and while you're at it, get an actual GPU. The GT710 is not even kind of suitable for gaming.

If you think of the data transfer protocols as kind of languages, Thunderbolt can speak PCI-E, but not USB. No component speaks USB other than USB devices. They'll always need a translator. The single exception being the new fully featured type-C connector. It's bi-lingual of sorts.

Thunderbolt works because it passes data directly through to the pcie interface. It can act just like a pcie extension cord. Firewire can technically do the same, although with a much lower bandwidth. USB passes through a dedicated controller.

Or, more accuratly, it has a siamese twin who can speak a different language.
