Windows has scheduled an update to w10 for the end of this week. Ofcourse I can cancel it, but only bc I happened to notice it happening on its own. My only worry going to windows 10 is that 4 of my friends who have upgraded to w10 have lost their data. Did they do something wrong or is that expected to happen? The data was not lost on the 1st day, for some odd reason windows decided to reset their data few days later.

They did something wrong I'm guessing.

Judge a product on its own merits AND the company that made it.

Oneplus 6 (Early 2023 to present) | HP Envy 15" x360 R7 5700U (Mid 2021 to present) | Steam Deck (Late 2022 to present)

Well, i can only speak for myself. I have done the windows 10 upgrade

on two systems, kept all the data and didn't encounter any issues on

either of them. Considering this is the intended result, i wouldn't expect

to lose my data. It never hurts to have a backup though.

Unless you backup your stuff, I can guarantee you that you're going to lose it some day anyway, most likely due to wear and tear on the harddrive. Keep your imporant shit at least one other place that isn't in the same computer, or you will lose it regardless.

I guess backup is my only option. But I do hope it does not do it so I can just say that my friends are not very smart.

I wouldn't say "my only option" when talking about backup. Please always backup your personal files, now with cloud services it's easier than ever, just get a Google Drive or DropBox or OneDrive account or similar (you can even have all of them, that what I did). It'll backup in the background and you'll be sure nothing will be lost. Have more than one backup if possible!

As for your Win10 upgrade, you can cancel it.

Quote

1. Uninstall KB3035583 and select the option to reboot later.

2. Run the Disk Clean up tool and select the Clean up system files after the initial scan. Select the Temporary installation files for deletion. Once they are removed reboot your system and then check for Windows Updates once again.

3. Wait for the scheduled time to arrive because that has alreay been set in motion if you choose a time for the upgrade. One hour prior to that you will see a window on your screen indicating that it is almost time for the upgrade to happen. This dialog does offer you the chance to reschedule as well.

4. Once the timer reaches zero then the system will begin the upgrade process.

5. Following the reboot, the attempt to upgrade will fail because you removed the temporary installation files earlier in this scenario.

6. You now need to check Windows Update and hide KB3035583 and the Windows 10 Upgrade when it is offered so they will not start again.
