CPU upgrade

So you can see my build in signature or at my profile.

I'm using i7 4790 right now together with Z97 anniversary.

 

I'm interested in upgrading it, but I don't know if I should buy Z97X gaming 3 for 110€ + i7 4790k for 320€.

Or should I go with i7 6700k for 350€ + ASRock Z170 GAMING K4 Fatal1ty for 125€ + DDR4 16GB ram for around 100€.

 

If I go for i7 6700k, I will end up paying around 150€ more than if I go for i7 4790k.

Also i7 4790k have better clock, and better OC scores as I saw on web.

 

Is that i7 6700k + DDR4 realy worth 150€ more?

I wouldn't bother upgrading, your CPU is strong more than enough. Maybe sell it used and get a used i7 4790K, but a i7 6700K with a new board and RAM upgrade is too pricey and unnecessary.

Also no need for a new motherboard, just use the one you have.

I would not recommend an upgrade here at all.

The advantage to going to the 6 is more RAM that's DDR4.
But you don't really need the RAM the 6 supports.

I'd say in your case it's not worth it to do either of those personally. But if you really want to upgrade Id' go with i7 6700K to get some decent upgrade features such as DDR4, USB type C/thunderbolt, x4 M.2 slot etc etc. I definitely wouldn't upgrade to another 4th gen CPU etc.

Well Z97 krait have also M.2 slot for fast SSD.

 

But you guys might be right. I could sell my i7 4790 for like 240€ maybe and Z97 anniversary for around 50€ if lucky.

So even i7 4790k and mobo upgrade would cost me 140€. Probbably I wouldn't notice that much performance increase in most games.

 

But I'm playing Guild Wars 2 that is realy CPU heavy, and right now my i7 4790 is working on 3,8GHz all cores. Somehow all cores can't be on 4,0 GHz for some reason.

 

With i7 4790k I could OC it to like 4,7 failry easy and that means almost 1GHz increase per core.

But still no idea if it would acctually increase performance of Guild Wars 2 since it's optimised worse than potato.

Why not a 5820K, 5930K or 5960X (If within your budget)?

Not in my budget sadly.

 

Was also thinking about 5820k, but in my country I can't find any used one. Cheapest avaliable is for 400€ + motherboard for 220€.

 

Might acctually cost me as much as upgrading to i7 6700k, because I need to buy DDR4 for that upgrade. But for 5820k, I could use my DDR3 that I have right now.

Still 620€ is over my budget right now.

 

Probbably best idea is to keep my current build and rather buy GTX 1070 when it comes out. Maybe after half year or something, I might be able to afford 5820k  

 

Working for 3,8€ per hour, so it takes some time before I can afford some decent PC upgrade

Totally get you! I can't afford it either... And a 1070 would be great! (You might want to wait for the new AMD stuff which will come out soon...)

Well AMD polaris will be released before september and it will be for lod-mid end cards probbably. Few month later they will release Vega version that will be high end. And after that we can expect 1080 Ti release like 2-3 month later. And than after few more months, another GPU versions ....

So I can just keep waiting  

 

I won't wait for Polaris, because if you ask me, AMD wasn't prepared on nvidia to strike like that, and they don't have enough time to change polaris to acctually be better and cheaper than 1070 or 1080 from nvidia.

 

Waiting for Vega ... more than 6 months. I think I will just get 1070, but only if it will cost less than 400€ in my country, and if benchmarks will show that it can acctually perform as good as titan x. Doesn't have to be faster, but at least head to head with it.

But will see in 5 days when NDA will be lifted
