Hello LTT Community! I'm new here but I have been binge watching the YouTube Channel for the past week. I build websites, program computers, and develop software for a living. I am also a casual gamer (Infestation: Survivor Stories, Rust, and a few others.). I am currently using a laptop for work. I am looking for the right setup to perform work without any hiccups and and be able to game on at least medium settings with decent FPS (50-75). I have prepared a list from just browsing on pcpartpicker.com. I'm not wanting to spend any more than what my current list is at but I am reaching out to the community to see if there are items other than the ones I have listed that are A.)Better for the same price or B.) Better and cheaper. If anyone could help and look at this list I would greatly appreciate it. Im trying to spend as little as possible without sacrificing a lot of performance. Here is my list:

Also, I am trying to stick to Red/Black build. So if it can't be found with red than just black will do.

Do you have any suggestions?

See, I would recommend an AMD chip but everyone else on here seems to hate the FX series so no, not really :P

(if it were just you and I I would recommend getting an FX 8xxx chip, same price range, higher clock speed and double the logical core count)

Yes, I would have hypothetically suggested that exact chip, especially since when using the 212 evo you can make insane overclocks on it (being an unlocked chip and all)

Also programs like CPUcores (I think that's what it's called) you can set one core to hardware, one to system tasks and keep the remaining 6 for your gaming with switchable profiles

Hello there, and welcome to the forums!

What do you think of this build? I think this build will be perfect for your use case, albeit a bit more expensive.

EDIT: I must add, the GPU might be a bit too much for casual gaming. You need to clear me on that on exactly what kind of games will you play.

The problem is that this is an nVidia product and scoring any nVidia product a "zero" is also highly predictive of the number of nVidia products the reviewer will receive for review in the future.

If it's very light gaming, we can settle with a cheaper GPU.

Hmm. Doesn't look like it needs all that much GPU power to run well, but if it is possible, try to keep the R9 380.

Because anything lower than this, and you get significantly worse performance compared to the price drop.

For a 20% price increase, you get a 75% core count increase. The R9 380 is literally the best budget GPU money can buy right now.

But if it's still not possible, you can get an R7 370.

I've tried saving as much money as possible while giving you a rock solid build for your use case. Try as much as possible to accommodate my part list. But if it's absolutely not possible, then we can discuss a bit more about your use case and what possible compromises can we make. :)

It's has a few issues but they can be smoothed out easy enough.

  • Cpu could be a bit cheaper. An i3 6100 is a cheaper pick. Keep the mobo
  • Take away the 16gb of ram. Get an 8gb kit and spend the extra money elsewhere
  • get a better card. A 380 or maybe a secondhand card like a 770 would be a good pick.
  • That HDD is potato. Get a 240gb-500gb SSD or a 1tb HDD. I reccomend a Samsung 850 EVO 250gb and a 1tb WD Blue
  • That cooler is a tad overkill for a locked chip. Stock should be fine enough.
  • That power supply isn't even 80 plus rated from what I can see, which isn't definitive but isn't a good sign. Get a EVGA 500B or a CX500M or somthing like that. Don't touch the W series from EVGA tho
  • No case? I reccomend the Fractal Design Core 1000 if you plan to stick with that mATX board but if you decide to go up to an ATX board the NZXT S210 is a solid cheap option. mITX is also a viable option. The Silverstone SG13 is a good case for that
  • HOPE I HELPED :)

Yeah, he's trying to be helpful and all, but I don't understand why he's trying to recommend you an AMD chip. ALL OF THEM are so far behind ANY Skylake i5 (even an i5-6400) that there is absolutely no reason to buy them! A lot of them are being beaten up by i3s! Even if you're only a casual gamer and don't need anything too powerful, the i5 will still reliably last you many years more.

Don't get any AMD chip now because they're so useless compared to Intel chips (unless you don't have the money to spend.) It'd be better to spend more on something that lasts longer, you know? AMD's Zen might end up being pretty great, but until then don't count on anything from AMD unless it's a graphics card.

Why don't you simply ask me why I'm recommending AMD CPUs?

Because they are the best choice for the money OP has. If OP had $750 to spare, then only would I recommend a Skylake i5 build, with a more powerful GPU to pair.

i3s are great only if your games will be DX11 titles that will utilize one or two cores at most. AMD is they only offering that provides quad core for less. And the FX-6300 is like a 6 core i3-4130, so an Athlon X4 845 should be a bit better, quad core i3-4130. Why quad cores? Because dual cores will no longer be adequate for gaming now and in the future (DX12).

http://www.pcworld.com/article/2851126/far-cry-4-woes-with-dual-core-processors-point-to-a-bleak-future-for-budget-pc-gamers.html

Does Intel make a slightly better, quad core i3-4130 chip? No. Is the AMD equivalent "useless"? HELL NO.
