I7 6700K

Go to solution Solved by Lurick,

I think max recommended temp is something like 75C and if you haven't overclocked or anything something is definitely wrong with the cooler or the chip.

Yes, what clock is it running at?

voltage is what matters

not clock speed

I don't want to insult your intelligence but for the sake of checking everything... You did apply thermal compound correct? and you're sure the cooler is tightened all the way down? temperatures that high with no overclock should absolutely not be happening.

People, this is AVX2 load. I expect nothing less from a non-delidded i7 running Prime95.

I have a Pc with an i7 6700K and gtx 970 while running prime 95 i reach 95°C i am using a tx3 cooler, is it running too hot?

Those temps are exactly in line with what we see with low end coolers and an AVX2 capable chip on Prime95. My 6700k runs 95C at stock speeds when undervolted to 1.1v in an ITX case (with an ITX cooler) on 48k FFT Prime95. This is normal. People just prefer to use less stressful stress tests, because their absurd overclocks won't handle Prime95. Even 4.5ghz on Prime95 AVX2 is enough to hit thermal junction temps if not delidded, or on high end water cooling.

If you want to test this theory, disable AVX2 and run it again. Notice how your chip magically runs 20C cooler. Under AVX2 load (and undervolted) my 6700k pushes 120w. When not undervolted, this number is 140w. Far cry from the 95w TDP. AVX2 is real, lol.
