Several months ago there was a similar email where you could opt to keep your 15GB, so this has been known for a while now.

Yet Google still provide a free 15GB in their GMail

 

I don't care if I'm not affected, what about all the people who are over 5GBs?!

What. I swear I never saw that email. I'm over the amount of storage they're gonna cut me to so I'm kinda screwed...

I actually couldn't underclock my 5 year old GPU to make it as slow as a next-gen console.

I also got that email, and they clearly are trying to make it more sustainable. When they originally set the amount of free space someone got, they needed to make up for it by paid users. Nothing is free, so Microsoft is paying for the free users using paid users. They need to adjust the amount of free stuff people get until it is sustainable.
