SMB: Move files to another location without relaying on local machine

Good day you all,

I currently run a small NAS machine for my backup needs using SMB (actually, Samba) shares.

When I have the need to move a file to another folder (or share), I find it easier to just move it using Windows Explorer. The problem with this is that every single time I do this, the local machine fetches the file(s) and then sends it to the new location, which in turn creates a huge performance bottleneck on the hard drives.

The only way to move files efficiently that I know of is logging into the web-based interface or sshing the machine and using the MV command. Is there a way I could prevent SMB acting this way?

No, this is hard-coded into SMB.

My native language is C++

If the servers have FTP, if they run server software that supports FXP then you can use an FXP Client like CuteFTP to transfer from remote machine to remote machine.

But yeah, SMB doesn't work in that way.

Too much hassle and I'm not going to teach my dad how to use an FTP client just for him to ask for help every time he has to move a song to another location.

Oh, no. I am a freelance working in a home office and sharing the server with my dad so that he won't lose the pictures taken during anniversaries and whatnot. :)
