Good thing none of their cards have 3.5gb of VRAM :D and you're well aware of that.

I see the 970 and 390 as 1080p cards tbh, even if they were marketed as 1440p. They can do 1440p at med settings.... Or 1080p at ultra. I'll take 1080p ultra over 1440p med any day.

But the last chunk is slower than SYS RAM ._.

Not really. It's roughly 1/7th the speed of the rest of the 3.5gb, but that's still 4x faster than sys ram, according to PCPER.

Thing is, when that is in use the whole VRAM has to drop to its level so as to work properly - cutting all the bandwidth by 7. Also, the base 970 is 224-bit, 56 ROP as opposed to the marketed specs - I am against the false specs more so than the slightly lower performance. Hence why I don't recommend it.

While I completed agree with you on the ROPs and that it was shady, let's try to put it in a vacuum and look at it as a card. Take nvidia out of the picture. It is a very capable ultra-1080 med-high-1440p card. Is the 390 usually a better choice? Yes. Are there times when the 970 decisively wins? Yup.

Also don't forget 1.75MB of L2 cache, instead of 2MB.

If you need CUDA or Linux then the 390 is not even an option so yes, there are uses for it. I've never argued a 390 for Linux

I also personally prefer a reference-cooler 970 in an HTPC rig.

Again, it's all on a case-by-case basis with the 390 usually winning.

I like the reference coolers but only on lower end GPUs like the 960/380 - 970 reference runs too hot for my liking

I say that only because I really like high-end HTPC's, and dislike watercooling in general. R9 Nanos are fantastic (especially for the price), but neeeeeeeed water cooling to take off. I don't want to put air back into the case, so most aftermarket cards are thrown out the window. That leaves a reference 970 and a reference 390... Between those 2, I choose reference 970. The reference 390 is slightly hotter and loud as hell. Aftermarket 390s are fantastic, but not optimal in an HTPC.

Reference 380X - that is what I want for myself - it should run cool and quiet with a decent fan bearing and vapor chamber (like the original 7970 reference)

7970 reference? That thing is a cross between a vacuum cleaner and a hair dryer (exaggeration, of course), I had one in my house until recently. It kept moderately cool, but the new reference coolers from AMD are at least a little ahead of the 7970 reference cooler, and nvidias current reference coolers are quite a bit ahead of it. The only louder card from that general time period was that satanic MSI 570. The thing was a volcano, and I'm not just talking about temps. Two whiney high-rpm and clicky 92mm fans, fuck that noise... Literally.

I remember Linus saying the 7970 reference ran cool and quiet in his NCIX Tech Tips days. Is it possible you had a bad bearing? (genuinely perplexed here)

Linus consistently had the 7970 reference on a bench in his house and made a smart-ass comment about the loudest thing in the room, eyeballed the 7970, then went dead silence to let the viewers hear the 7970.

This also isn't a single-case with me, otherwise I'd just ignore it. It's about 4. Still a relatively small sample size... Until you add on the guys I know at microcenter with the same experience and who have had returns because of it. Then the number jumps to roughly 20.

You think so? I think that he's moderately objective now, and was lacking some knowledge back then.

Again, the 7970 was quiet in comparison to it's predecessor and the 570. Reference coolers have legitimately come a long way.

He gave the Razer BS a flawless review even though the 15W CPU overheats. He gave the other Blade a flawless review despite the heating inside (95*C ingame?!) - he stated that a 960 performs the same as a 380 or better (BS) and he constantly downplays anything AMD do (I know how I sound but hear me out). In 2014, when the 295X2 launched, he praised it as a 'truly enthusiast grade product" but now calls the Pro Duo "useless".

I would agree that the Pro Duo is useless for most people, as is the Titan X. Is it not set to launch at $1,500? I would also say that the 295x2 is useless, but that's just me. But he praised the 295x2 as a miracle of engineering, and it fucking is. The Pro Duo seems to be chasing after the mantle that currently belongs to the retarded Titan X, whereas the 295x2 was coming after the 7990 and 690, which had a whole host of issues.

I never heard him say that the 960 beats the 380, got a reference? I haven't been watching a ton over the last 3 months.

His benches showed the 960 and 380 tied with the 960 ahead by 1-2fps. Fishy when DF are showing a 10fps difference

But the guy who first reported the Razer Stealth temps was just playing hearthstone - that should not get the CPU to 90+*C - the Blade 14 has a 970M - why if it's not meant for gaming?

I personally dislike the Pro Duo and Titan X but they're still decent work-grade cards.

I agree with you. I'm just saying it wasn't reviewed as a gaming notebook, was it? Even if it's advertised and specced as one.

For who? Who are they targeting?
