I don't know if you can even buy a 290X.  They're pretty much sold out.  Unless you go to the used market.

The 380X is a better card than the 960.  It's also about $75 more than the 960.

For R9 380X money, spend the extra $50 and get yourself a GTX 970 with a free copy of the Division.  A far better card than anything you listed.

If you go the 290X route, make sure your PSU can handle it.  It's a very hot and power hungry card.  You don't want to turn your room into a furnace.

Is a 970 2gb good for a mid gamer?

A 970 will kick the chit out of a 380X.

Minimum frame rates is quite important.  The higher, the less likely the gpu stutters.

Ehhh... Slight exaggeration. There are games that will crush it, such as BF4 and Witcher 3. Still an excellent card, just need to do slight tweaks to settings.

I disregard AA as most cards in this segment are not meant to use it - GameBreaks is also out of the question

I know, but you can't just disregard AA when speaking to other people, as some people find it valuable. Especially at 1080p. Also I wasn't counting GameWorks either, which you know has basically zero downside since it's just another OPTIONAL graphical setting / library that is actually fairly neat.

@don_svetlio has a slight bias towards AMD, but is usually pretty damn close to accurate.

Current performance hierarchy (generalized, will vary depending on game)

980ti > Fury X > Fury > Nano = 980  390x > 390 ≥ 970 (roughly a 4-7% difference between 390 and 970 with the 390 USUALLY winning) > 380x > 380 > 960 > 950 > 370

Nvidia is winning at top-end and lower-end, but AMDi s dominating mid-tier GPUs.

It may be so and I apologize.  However with the way you obsess over AMD, that image is difficult to ignore.  I just never seen devotion like your's.  With your passion, AMD should hire you so they can dig themselves out of their hole.

I've NEVER recommended a Fury X or 370. Read my post history. 950 and 980 Ti are better - but the rest are simply poor value on Nvidia's side. Am mostly objective when I am giving advice and usually provide benches. Tis' just the way it is.

To be fair, 970 vs 390 actually comes down to what games people play. Most of the time they're pretty close to eachother, so if somebody plays several gamesworks games or wants to use PhysX, then the 970 is the way to go. If not, the 390 is the easy winner. Hence why I always ask.

DX12 tho - 970 gets crushed with the 390 being over 20fps head.

Btw - there is a 370X apparently (270X rebrand (7870)) which is similar to a 950

Not true. When people say that they have a $600 budget, he always recommends a 980 ti. He also always recommends 950 over 370. But, he will never recommend a 970 over a 390, even though it depends on the game. Hence why I say slight. Because it isn't a major bias, just enough of a bias to not ask what games people will be playing when they're looking for a mid-high end card. But the 960 is ALWAYS a loser to a 380. It gets crushed in too many games, even if it wins in 1 or 2.

I would imagine that's a rebrand of the 7870 ghz.

Still, considering Nvidia are pushing 8GB of VRAM for Pascal, 3.5 is suddenly becoming tight.
