Now this SSD seems like an extremely compelling option. Should I just pay asking ($57) for the 'barely-used' 520-series SSD if the seller agrees to come to a public location and run a program to prove that it's in top shape and hasn't been written to a whole lot?

Then again, I don't know of any such programs. I'll be grateful for any recommendations.

that one? it looks promising. it'll most likely work great.

Crystal disk info is the only one I know of.

I got him to bring a laptop, but the model is obscure and we're unsure of whether it uses the SATA III interface.

Do you know a surefire way of finding out besides copying a file and checking whether speeds exceed 150 MB/s?

I just noticed..

the lifetime writes are 4 TB and yes I understand the worry but if Crystaldisk shows the same when you check then you're fine. 4 TB writes are still very low.

Does it pose any risk? If 10TB writes put it in the red zone, 4TB suddenly doesn't look too great for me.

no no. 10 TB doesn't put it in the end zone, it's just that you want to keep the drive for quite a few years don't you? and well it is a personal I'd only take it if it's still semi new. 10 TB is still low.. I just do not like buying something that isn't going to give me a relatively new experience. most SSDs can write 100s of terabytes without a problem, no need to worry haha.

as a reference, here is my 950 pro's waranty listing

here is a 60 GB version of the 520 series writing over 100 TB.. the smaller the SSD the lower the endurance. http://ssdendurancetest.com/ssd-endurance-test-report/Intel-SSD-520-60

keep in mind my warranty listing is only what they will warranty and replace if it dies before that. usually they last even a whole lot longer.

Understood. So, do I give him $57 for it?

in my country $ 57 is a great price. I'm not sure around other parts. but seeing as you said SSDs are expensive yes give him $57

Well, I just found something eerily similar to Garageband on Windows, so Hackintosh is no longer immediately necessary. It would be nice to have iMovie, though. Sony Movie Studio 13 Platinum doesn't have the most streamlined interface. Still, it gets the job done, and it has more functionality.
