Best storage solution

My current 240GB boot SSD (Crucial CT240 BX200) is getting a bit too small, so I was thinking of an upgrade and while I'm at it, maybe get a speed upgrade as well.

 

I think 512GB will be enough for the time being, what would be the best performance I could get for about €150 in the following options:

- One 512GB SSD

- One 512GB M.2 SSD

- Two 256 (or 240)GB SSD in RAID 0

 

The M.2 drive should be a socket 3 with M key type 2242/2260/2280, compatible with the ASUS Z170I Pro Gaming mobo.

Go with a single 512gb drive, there's no real point in going RAID unless you like the risk and do an insane amount of video work.

My vote goes for a 500gb Sata SSD. M.2 isn't really worth the premium unless you actually need that extra read/write speed...which 99.99% of people don't. (Or unless you're willing to pay a lot more money in order to reduce cable clutter)

Could you recomend a specific brand/model?

 

I have a separate HDD and a NAS for data, and I don't mind reinstalling everything. So this "risk" is one I'm willing to accept. The reason I'm concidering RAID0 is because I'm working with AutoCAD, and loading e.g. material libraries or large designs could still take from 30sec. up to a minute or longer. Also the price of two 240/256GB SSD's is pretty much equal to a single 512GB SSD, I just don't know which are the best for RAID 0.

Samsung Evo or Pro are usually good options.

 

I'd check to see if you'll actually see a tangible increase in performance. RAID doesn't always mean improved speeds, and a lot of the time it's unnoticeable to most users.
