Added New Memory, Now PC is Slower?

Hello there,

This is the first time I've ever upgraded the memory on my current PC. I was running 16GB of Avexir DDR3 memory at 1600MHz speed, and I have just replaced it with 32GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 memory at 1866MHz speed. Now, my PC feels like its significantly slower than what it was before I upgraded (especially when booting up).

Also, the first and second time I turned my PC on after the installation, the PC turned on, did nothing, shut down, then turned back on fully functional. Is this normal?

Thanks for your help.

EDIT: All of the memory is being detected properly

Does your motherboard support 1866MHz? What motherboard are you using?

I'm using a Gigabyte Z97-HD3.

My CPU is an i7 4790K at stock speed and stock voltage.

I have 4 sticks at 8GB each. All of the sticks are identical (with a different heat sink).

how is it slower? other than longer boot times (understandable)

did you enable XMP? if your ram and motherboard supports it

is the ram running at the right frequency?

Hang on, If they have different heat sinks, does that mean you got them at different times?

If this is true, then that means that they might not be rated to run in dual- or quad- channel together?

On some occasions, it was very slow when logging into my user profile, which usually takes like 1 second, but it took about 20. It also feels slightly more sluggish when opening folders, windows, etc.

check cpu-z and see if the ram is actually in dual chanel or is running at the right speed. if not, you have to enable xmp.

No, I bought them at the same time. Corsair just offers their Vengeance series of ram with different heat sink colours to better match set ups I guess.

EDIT: Also, the part code/part name only varies by the last letter.

For the RAM with the black heat sink, it is 16GBX3M2A1866C9, and for the blue heat sink, it is 16GBX3M2A1866C9B

Have you ever used all four RAM sockets then? You might have a bad RAM socket.

EDIT: Derp, just remembered that all of the memory was detected correctly.

I believe this was the problem. I forgot to enable it when I installed the memory. I've just enabled it and my PC seems to be performing as good as it was before. Thanks for your help!
