Upgrade from AMD FX-6300

Hi my current system specs are:

 

MoBo: ASUS M5A97 R2.0

CPU: AMD FX-6300 (Overclocked to 4.2GHz)

GPU: AMD Radeon R9 380 4GB GDDR5

RAM: 1x8GB HyperX 1866 MHz

PSU: Sentey 725W

 

What is a good CPU to upgrade to whilst still keeping the motherboard and have a bit of headroom? (not really necessary)

If you want to keep the mobo an 8350 is about as good as you can get. Id suggest that if you upgrade you get a intel i5 as the 8350 isn't much faster.

I would say go Skylake if you were to switch to Intel  here are some benchmarks of FX-8350 vs i5 4460.

Well hold on... Buy a used Xeon E5-2670 from eBay and a X79 motherboard! It is going to be way better than the FX-8350 and perhaps the Intel Core i7-5820K (Multi-Core at least)

Do you mean the Xeon? In this case you can't do any overclocking unless you change the base clock...

for 75$ it's a good deal, but it's in not a worthy upgrade to even the FX-6300 he already own...if he want something that would game better than the AMD chip he would need something along the lines of an i5-4590/4690 or core i5-6400/6500...those begin to be worthy upgrades from the old Am3+
