and you can get windows from other sources, like G2A or Kinguin or subreddit microsoftsoftwareswap

This will be my first PC build, criticism and advice is welcome.

Budget and Location:

My budget is about $1,000, but I'm flexible if I need to be. I live in the USA (Missouri specifically).

Aim:

My primary focus is gaming, though I'll also use it for word processing and web browsing. I do edit video sometimes, but nothing big. I'm going to get the new Battlefield game when it comes out, and I suspect the system requirements will be very similar to Star Wars Battlefront (2015). Other games include Minecraft, Arma 3, and Metal Gear Solid V.

Monitors:

When I first build the PC I'll be using my TV (1080p 60Hz). Soon after I plan to buy a 1080p 60Hz monitor, and in a few years I may upgrade to 1440p 60Hz or 1080p 144Hz. I'm planning the PC around 1080p 60Hz.

Peripherals:

I can reuse my mouse, and I have a TV I can use temporarily. I also have an old USB keyboard I can use for a while. I figure I can build the computer now and worry about fancy peripherals later on. I'll be reusing my laptop hard drive (if possible), but I think the OS may be tied to my motherboard, so I may need to buy a copy of Windows.

I'll be building the PC sometime 2-10 months from now. I want to plan the PC as if I were ordering parts today, and update it as time goes on.

So far I'm looking at a GTX 970 and a quad-core i5 (the i5-4690K looks promising). The hard drive I'm hoping to reuse from my laptop is a Seagate STBD1000400 SSHD.

Amazon link to the hard drive: http://amzn.com/B00BSH3CCC

PC Part Picker link: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/J9kRpg

I don't plan to overclock until I need to.

I don't know which manufacturers are the best for this GPU, or if it's possible to use a laptop drive in a desktop. Any help answering these questions or choosing other parts is appreciated.

Wait and don't make the list if you plan on building it in 2-0 months. Polaris and Pascal are coming.

I would wait until Polaris and Pascal come out. I'm waiting until Polaris is released and then buying the R9 390 at a discounted price.

Why MSI when you can get Sapphire for cheaper? At least when I last checked.

So far two people have posted builds with the R9 390... is the price / performance better than the GTX 970 at this point?

It has been for like a year or so.

I don't remember where I got it in my head the 970 was better, I'll definitely look into the R9 390 and probably end up waiting for the new GPUs.

No point in buying a GPU right now except for SLI/Xfire. I'd wait for Polaris and Pascal and if the rumors are true, Polaris it will have 980ti performance for $300.

You apparently haven't seen his responses to questions on YouTube. He is very condescending and aggressive in his comments with which there is little justification. He acts totally different in his videos. I don't necessarily care for this content style and there is nothing really unique about him or his channel. His endless dick jokes and toilet humor are annoying as well.
