Buddy looking for GPU...

VagabondWraith

My friend came to me and asked if the 980 is worth it over the 970. He wants to use the Oculus and he plays MMO's i.e. Black Desert Online etc. Not sure about his other components. His budget is $300-$450 but can stretch to a 980 if it's worth it. Btw he's coming from a 5700 Ultra.

Basically, he wants to keep the card for a while but did mention he's a little worried about 4GB only. I told him he can wait til June for nVidia new cards but he seems to need something now.

And before you mention it, I did ask him if he looked at AMD and he said "GeForce all the way." So obviously he's preferring to stay green.

Make sure your buddy is aware he´s a biased idiot, then just tell him to wait for Pascal.

Be sure to tell him he is getting a bad deal for his money. Also - Pascal is close and 970 is a borked design. That leaves the 980 by itself

So do you think the 980 is worth it over the 970? He's keeping this for quite a while.

Wait for Pascal. Maxwell is doing shitty in DX12 already, and it´ll do worse once Pascal comes out.

This is basically your best answer.

He can

1. Wait for newer cards more suited for VR

2. Buy a 980 now and get shanked in the back by Nvidia when Pascals out

970 won't get him far since he'll be dropping settings due to VRAM limits and no A-sync with DX12 games

Even if he wants to stay green, he's way better off waiting for Pascal. Maxwell has a bleak future. Tell him to be patient and bear with the iGPU in the mean time. He can try Blade and Soul in the mean time since it runs okay on an iGPU.

AMD fanboys remind me of the Black Lies Movement.

Anyways, this is a good deal for a 980:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1086385-REG/msi_gtx_980_gaming_4g_gforce_gtx980_gaming_graphics.html

$447 after MIR.

He may also get a copy of The Division, a $60 game bringing down the price of the 980 to around $387.

That is a stellar deal compared to any of AMD's toasters.

I'll text him and ask him. If it's as bad as you mentioned then yeah, a 980 won't do him no good. :)

Except the 980 is always stupid. Either spend a little extra for the TI or go with a 970. The price to performance of the 980 is shit.

Stupid huh?

AMD again rebadged the 290 to a 390, gave it an extra 4gb vram it can't use, and charge people and extra $100.

By the way, I returned my 390 and I'm back to my 960.  I can hold off until next gen gpus from both camps get revealed.

You never know what his past experiences were with AMD. Many people become biased due to previous problems with a brand. If you bought a brand new car and it broke down 5 times in a month, you might develop a bias as well. I have developed a bias to certain companies due to bad experiences. I will use either AMD or Nvidia, but I have had good experiences with both.

I have convinced him to wait until June when Pascal releases. I think it's the smart move, but it wasn't easy lol.

Amen.  AMD has consistently let me down in the past.  I was a fan of their's during the Athlon XP days.  Their processors were awesome and gave Intel a run for their money.  After that they've become nothing but slow garbage.  Ever since Intel introduced the Core architecture, AMD has been eating dust.

As for the GPU when it was still ATI, they too were ok.  However they have ALWAYS been plagued with running too hot and burning themselves to death.  Driver support was also atrocious.  Even after AMD bought Radeon, it continued to be garbage.  Just about every card of mine that died was ATI/AMD.

Then there's their horrendous driver support.  I remember when I bought a Radeon card, the driver version on the disc that came with the box was the SAME as the driver on their website.  That's in a one year window.  Then they go around accusing Nvidia of paying off developers to purposely sabotage the game for AMD hardware.  LOL!  WTF?  It's not Nvidia's fault that they put in the effort to send engineers to work with developers.

Honestly AMD has been putting more effort the past 3 years.  Their products (gpu only, cpu is still trash) have been fairly good.  Heck, I chose the 390 over the 970.  Their driver updates have also been more up to date.  Mantle wasn't that impressive.  Now there are talks about DX12 games running better on their hardware.  That's not going to get me to jump their bandwagon yet.  The stupidest thing someone can do is jump on something that's still on its infant stage and claim victory.  DX10 had tons of bugs.  Games performed slower than DX9 in its early stage.  Same when 11 came out.  The same is happening with 12.  I would wait about a full year before making a call.

One thing Nvidia won't do it take things lying down.  Whether they play clean or dirty, they won't sit this one out.  As for developers, they won't ignore team green.  After all, Nvidia owns about 70% of the PC gaming market.  It would be suicidal for developers to ignore them.  I'm sure they would work out a way to tweak the games to work well on GForce hardware.

Then there's polaris and pascal.  One or both could be a bust.  Or successful.  All the talks about DX12 could all of a sudden become irrelevant once the hardware has been revealed.

One thing is for certain, hopefully both sides do "well".  If Nvidia trips and fall, AMD would certainly benefit but not buyers of their hardware.  Expect to see rebrands of old hardware go up in price.  If AMD's polaris falls into the toilet, AMD's doors may close and we'll be buying Geforce cards for double the price.

You're right.  He blatantly called someone an idiot simply because the other person preferred something else.  That's classic fanboy behavior.

Problem with that is it shows a OCed 380X losing to a stock 960. We all know that's not the case. Find a credible bench.
