Hi!

I just got my new Dell S2716DG monitor, and i found that it has a little light difference on the right and left side. I took a picture which look like this: http://imgur.com/nQGUYGV

Is this horrible backlight bleed? I paid 550 dollars for this monitor, and kind of expect it to not have any issues like that. What is your opinion?

but might be just the potato camera

but its a really bad backlight bleed

i think its a TN panel so does moving your head around fixes it?

If that was a 10 year old TN panel it'd be acceptable. A modern, reasonably expensive 2K monitor? Not at all - RMA that piece of bleep, or get a refund

Thanks for the reply guys! Is the screen supposed to be all black when taken a picture of?

Should i maybe try the Acer xb271HU instead?

I can see a little difference when looking right at the monitor MOONZY.

If it was an IPS panel it'd be almost solid black.

I'd definitely go for that Acer one instead, it actually is IPS.

I want to, but i have also heard that many people have had issues with the IPS variants, isnt it kind of a lottery to get a good one?

With monitors in general, yes it is.

IPS panels are higher quality than TN panels though, and probably have much stricter quality control (as they are used by creative professionals for whom colour reproduction is very important)

When you take a picture of it, it's pretty much impossible to get solid black, because cameras will focus on any difference and blow it out of proportion. Pictures of backlight bleed look much worse than they do in real life, I'm surprised everyone replying here isn't aware of that.

Thanks for noting that, perhaps OP can clarify on how much difference there is between the photo and IRL to give us some perspective (though the fact he didn't already leads me to assume there's not much)

Edit: Also yes, I am quite aware of it, but I've never thought it to make a huge difference @JoeyDM

Let's make them all aware of that.

@Moonzy, @JuztBe, @Benergy, @Crusader93

im aware, thats why i told the op to shift his head around to see if it solved that issue

knowing its a TN panel and all lol

well if it doesnt go away almost entirely then you should just send it back

@Crusader93 <--- this is how you get someone's attention btw xD

you need to either quote or mention them so they'll get a notification

If it affects your viewing experience in significant way, then it is bad, no matter what people say after seeing this photo. This monitor is for you, you paid for it and it has to fulfill your requirements. Simple.

Ofc its not nearly as bad IRL, but i just dont like the thought of having bought a faulty monitor at a 550 price tag.

For example the color yellow looks more bright yellow on the left side of the screen, and more orange kinda looking on the right.

It will be difficult for any of us to say without being able to see what it actually looks like, but it looks like a pretty normal amount to me. No LCD monitor will ever be perfectly uniform, it's sadly an inherent flaw of the technology.

So there is actually no "perfect" TN monitor out there?

The difference is really not something i can notice ingame unless the scene in the game is completely dark. If i take a yellow color as mentioned above and move it from side to side, it gets a little brighter on the left side of the screen if i look closely for it. I read many places that backlight bleed is a very common thing, and as you say maybe i should just keep this one, since there is a extremely slight chance to get a panel with little bleed? And if i want g-sync with good picture quality, i have to pay additional 300 dollars here in norway, which i dunno is worth it, since the picture quality on this dell is good enough for me.

I know you have a hard time knowing since you are not here and can see my screen, but with the info i have provided, can you say what you think you would have done?

Watch from 4:30 ish he shows the backlight bleed, this monitor seems to be cool with that.

Backlight bleed varies on a unit-by-unit basis, you don't look at one monitor and say that all monitors of that model will have X amount of backlight bleed.
