I once had someone snipe me for $1 up from my bid in the last 10 seconds give or take on a pair of knifes.

One time I sold an exercise bike on ebay, since I never used it. It ended at £20.50. When they came to collect, I said just give me the £20 and they forced me to take the 50p as they said that made the winning bid difference.

The assumption I make is that nothing is final until it is over. Lots of people snipe to prevent out-bidding, although it is a gamble that no-one else is also sniping too. Even if it looks like you lost by a small amount, you never know how much over that they bid due to the bidding system incrementing for you. So even if you squeezed another bid in, you might still have lost.

I think it was Yahoo Japan auction site that had an anti-snipe feature. If there's a bid close to when the auction closes, it would extend it by 10 minutes. Maybe better for seller, not so for buyer.

I kinda thought that was common practice, probably frowned upon, but still fairly common.  I've bid on several items in the past year and every single time the price increased rapidly with ~10 seconds left.  After loosing too many times, I adopted the old adage, 'If you can't beat them, join them'.

That's why I'm one of those who snipe at the last second, instead of just having a winning bid for days. That way I'm sure I get the item I want.
