Yes you always have to replace thermal paste when you remove the cpu cooler

I have an Anet A8 as my project printer and a i3 MK3 for when I want things to work.

I extrude my own filament and haven't saved a penny yet.

I would probably replace it especially because it is overheating.

It seems to have the original thermal compound from the factory so you should change it with something like some Arctic Silver thermal compound.

Good luck!

Since you removed the heatsink, and its the original thermal compound, you need to replace it regardless of it being dried up or not.

I can't really say something that haven't been said yet.

  • Once you took of the cooler always replace the thermale paste
  • You seem to have the stock cooler, upgrading the cooler would give you better cooling performance
  • if your pc and the fans in particular are very dusty cleaning it can improve cooling too

Good luck

You don't need to replace thermal compound if you remove the heatsink. Linus has done that plenty of times.

your right you dont "need" to but its always nice to have fresh compound, its not like its super expensive, buy a good qual;ity tube of it on amazon and your good for years to come, bought a tube of noctua nt-h1 for 10$ cad on amazon, probably be good for many years, i still have my tiny tube from my 212 evo and ive done over 10 applications and i still have more then half left and the noctua tube has easily 2-3 times more  (sorry rambled on.... oops)

true

I like to kill hardware. In 2016 alone I have killed 20 Xeon 5160, and 10+ Pentium 4.

No you NEED to. I forgot to reapply and my cpu to went from 67°C under load to 99°C under load before I hit thermal junction and shut off my pc

How old was the thermal paste when you did it? Those that need to cure don't like being disturbed.

Then you did something wrong. It must have been very old paste, or you left the cooler off for too long. If you take the cooler off, blow out dust and immediately put it back on, it really doesn't do anything. I've done it before, and it didn't change anything.

Nah that's not true.

I've done it multiple times with compound I have just applied to been sitting for weeks to been used for months.

Bruh. Look at this. That is from when I forgot to reapply apply thermal paste.

Also I would like to correct my earlier statement. You don't need to reapply thermal compound IF you are applying a new application of thermal compound and mess up with the placement of the cpu cooler and it doesn't go on tight but if the thermal compound has cured (is hard to the touch not sticky like glue) then you need to reapply or risk bad heat transfer from the cpu to the cooler.
