So I purchased a BenQ XL2411Z 144hz monitor, and I can't get my computer to display past 90hz. Before installing my GPU I used DDU to completely remove all graphics drivers from the OS/registry. I have Windows 10 Pro. Using a Asus STRIX GTX 970 4GB, and a AudioQuest Carbon HDMI cable http://www.bestbuy.com/site/audioquest-carbon-6-6-hdmi-cable-black-dark-gray/9892785.p?id=1218202520524&skuId=9892785. I came across another website forum saying to use CRU (custom resolution utility) which creates override profiles and forces the resolution you set up. After figuring out the software, I created the correct values for 1920 by 1080 @ 144hz. It says that profile is currently active, but when I go into games it doesn't display a 144hz option. The BenQ info tab says it's only at 60hz as well. So then I used the Nvidia Control panel, and before I couldn't get past 60hz, I was able to succesfully create a custom resolution of 1920 by 1080 @ 90hz, at 91hz it black screens and I have to go back. When I go into games I do get the option for 1920 by 1080 @ 90hz, so CRU is doing absolutely nothing for some reason. According to Best Buy's website, the HDMI cable I listed above can only go up to 120hz, but why can I only get up to 90hz? Also, in the BenQ's OSD menu, the first category for changing settings is Display, but I can't edit those settings no matter what I change else where.

I don't think HDMI supports 144Hz. At least not older versions, HDMI 2.0 might, but I'm not sure. Try running with a DP cable.

your monitor doesnt have HDMI 2.0

to get 144hz you will need to use dual link DVI or DP

There is no DP input on this monitor, and from what I gathered, HDMI 2.0 is capable of 144hz granted as long as your cable can support it, and your GPU has HDMI 2.0. All newer Nvidia cards including the 970 support HDMI 2.0. The cable I listed above can get up to 120hz according to Best Buy's website, which they get that info from the mfg. I can't find anything saying this monitor does not have HDMI 2.0, and nothing saying it does. I'd rather use HDMI since this cable is really good, and I don't like DVI at all compared to HDMI, specifically my HDMI cable.

No I'm just trying to see if anyone knows of software problems like using Win 10 that would prevent me from using the full bandwidth of my HDMI cable. I have yet to try DVI, so I think I'll give that a try at least and see what happens, but if I can't figure out why it only allows 90hz on HDMI it would kinda suck and I'd have to move the HDMI cable to the 4k TV I don't use anymore :(

Because HDMI is not primarily designed for Computer Monitors, but TV's... so no high refresh rates needed.

DVI and DP are the interfaces designed for high refresh rate display.

Welp, I'm using a Dual Link DVI cable, the one that came with the monitor, and I can now choose 120hz or 144hz. There's got to be some sort of software problem that is not allowing it to detect that the HDMI cable I have is capable of 120hz. I'm already noticing graphical problems like washed out colors that have more of a whiter tint to it. Couple hundred dollar HDMI cable I can't use to it's full potential because someone thought it was a good idea to limit HDMI bandwidth is pretty stupid foresight in my opinion. Funny thing is, a lot of high end TV's are actually capable of 120hz or more, but apparently some programmer whether that be Nvidia or BenQ is preventing this. I guess I'll give it a go and do some testing with gaming. I'd still like to figure out what is actually bottle necking my HDMI's capability.
