Need antivirus suggestions without pop-ups

Hello everyone,

for years I've been using AVG (free edition) myself, but also installing it on pc's I manage for relatives. It's been very good to me without to many problems.

Lately (for like a year now) there has been a LOT of pop-ups. It's not only annoying, but it's been causing me problems in the sense that those relatives don't seem to get that they are ads and click them, install trials, then those run out, start bugging them for renewals, so I need to uninstall&reinstall... You get the jist of it.

So TLDR; suggest me antivirus, free, no annoying popups.

And yes, I know using common sense and windows defender is fine, but you know how it goes with non-techie relatives...

I usually install malwarebytes as well for scans once in a while.

Thanks,

Stef

Defender and malwarebyes is fine IMO, as long as you tell the relatives that it absoloutely must be ran once every week with updates installed too.

Please quote my post, or put @paddy-stone if you want me to respond to you.

I use AVG too, the recent update has caused a bug where there are popups even when you disable tray notifications

you can follow this to stop them:

Quote

1. Disable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Temporarily Disable AVG Protection
Agree the default timeout - usually 10 minutes?
2. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer and Navigate to:
C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG201x\ ...... for 32bit systems (201x means 2013 or 2014)
C:\Program Files (x86)\AVG\AVG201x\ for 64bit systems
3. Delete the following three folders: Awacs, Banners, Tuneup
Do not delete anything else you see inside the AVG201x folder.
If you accidentally delete anything else go to the recycle bin and restore it.
Note: If you have already paid for the Tuneup addon then keep this folder
4. Close the My Computer/Explorer window
5. Enable AVG self protection:
Right click the AVG icon in the taskbar (near the clock)
Select to Enable AVG Protection - takes 20 seconds or so to fully activate.

worked for me

Yeah I saw that post 5 minutes before I wrote this. However:

1) I'm not doing that on all the pc's I manage.

2) Since it's on their forums, they know. They will probably fix this in updates regularely. I'm not planning to do this every week.

I just want a simple install-only solution. I want it to be care-free as much as possible :-)

well avast has kinda gone to crap lately, and AVG has this popup issue, so these are the only two "good" free antiviruses that I know of

malwarebytes is free but thats not an antivirus and it doesnt actively scan

symantec has actually become very good in the past few years, its no longer a POS like it used to be but idk if you can use that for free
