I would get the G2 over the GS if they are priced similar.

The fan on the 850W GS doesn't stay in eco mode for very long if you look at Jonnyguru's review.

The G2 stayed off for longer.

They are both great units, but I personally prefer the G2 (If they are priced the same) just for the extra bit of warranty (That I am never likely to use xD

is it depending what your system temperature is?

It's depending on the load on the 12V rail iirc

So that has a little bit to do with temperature but not really, it depends on how loaded up the PSU is.

I have the G2 850. I have never heard my PSU fan, and my watercooled PC is virtually silent, so it's not exactly being drowned out.  I just turned the eco mode on today. I was only able to tell the difference between on and off by sticking my head behind the case and feeling the air coming out of the PSU.

Just saying,  the 850G2 is quiet enough in my system to stay under my 17 dba threshold volume when not gaming,  and when gaming (near 750-800W load) it stays under my 23 dba threshold.

It should also be noted the Define S has really good psu noise  isolation.

Again this is on eco mode.

I do have a gq 650 in my nas,  it's a nice unit as well.  Fan never turns on though obviously.
