So I was thinking of building a cheap hackintosh machine and I'm wondering is it legal? Also do you purchase the operating system? How do you go about getting the OS?

You can buy it from Apple pretty cheap and it is perfectly legal. You can purchase it or torrent it if you choose to do so. The only thing you have to worry about it some hardware components works better than others.

as a suggestion for something like a hackintosh,for uses other than a workstation,I'd just buy an APU.

If you purchase the OS, then he's it is legal. You can get OSx off of the Apple website

You have to have a Mac in order to do a Hackintosh generally these days. Because the last two OS X have been through the Mac App Store. 

 

Unless you get an old version of Mac on a disc and upgrade from there. 

 

It's legal. Apple doesn't like you doing it because it's taking away from their Mac sales, but fuck it. iMacs are dumb tbh.

but I'd put it in my room use a wireless keyboard and mouse hook it up to tv and use it as that and watch movies and such

Your best bet is to just build a gaming system for PC and have a second SSD in there for Mac OS X.

I could do that? that would be sweet so just put an ssd in there for mac osx... but what wouldn't I need a big ssd?

Then just put an SSD in your system and be done with it. It's a waste of money to build an entire system when you have one already.

120/128GB would do. You can have 250/256 to be safe, but not needed. You can have a HDD accessed by both OSes.

Actually, it is not legal to install Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware (but a vitrual machine is OK as of 10.8) as per the EULA (see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSx86) though I don't think Apple will crack down on enthusiasts making hackintoshes just yet ;)
